The Living Ghats | Collared cat snake
In the Western Ghats, the collared cat snake is an arboreal species commonly found in forested habitats, where it moves along branches and shrubs, especially after dusk. Its patterned body provides camouflage among vegetation, making it difficult to detect when at rest.
It moves slowly and deliberately, often pausing between movements. The head is typically held slightly elevated as it uses visual and chemical cues to detect prey such as lizards, frogs, and small birds. It may remain motionless for extended periods before advancing again.
Primarily nocturnal, it becomes more active at night, moving through the understory and lower canopy in search of food. Its movement is controlled and methodical, with periods of stillness followed by short advances.
