# Kuruva Island Revives Tourism

1. Kuruva Island, a 950-acre expanse of evergreen forest surrounded by branches of the east-flowing Kabani River in North Wayanad, is now in a phase of rejuvenation.
2. With tourist entry to Kerala’s largest riverine island reopened, the tourism sector has come alive again after months.
3. Rich with rare species of birds, flowers, butterflies, medicinal plants, and a variety of trees and climbers, Kuruva Island is a favorite destination for travelers.
4. Numerous visitors interested in botany and zoology, students from within and outside the state, and foreign tourists who come to enjoy the wilderness have played a major role in placing Kuruva Island on the world tourism map.

# # Daily Visitor Limit: 489 People

1. Until restrictions on tourist entry were introduced in 2017, thousands used to visit Kuruva Island daily.
2. The tourism-driven revival in the rural area of Palvelicham significantly helped improve local incomes and living standards.
3. Though the tourist trails inside the island were later limited for safety reasons, visitors’ fondness for Kuruva Island did not diminish.
4. Currently, a total of 489 people are allowed entry per day through two gates—one from the Mananthavady–Palvelicham side and the other from the Pulpally–Pakkom side.
5. Entry is usually suspended temporarily during the monsoon when the Kabani River’s water level rises. This year, the island—closed around mid-June—was reopened to tourists from September 14.
6. Ticket rates: INR 220 for adults, INR 100 for students, and INR 440 for foreign tourists.

# # Bamboo Rafting Captivates Tourists

1. Bamboo rafting conducted under the leadership of the DMC is a major attraction at Kuruva Island.

3. Kayaking, previously priced at INR 300 for two people, will resume shortly.
