Several members of Delhi University’s statutory bodies have urged the university to defer the implementation of four-year undergraduate programmes by one year, saying students have a right to know full syllabus of these courses. The development comes days before DU’s Academic Council meeting on August 3 to discuss syllabus of the first semester of the four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUP) based on the newly introduced Under Graduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF).

Delhi University (DU) constituted a seven-member committee last week to discuss the teacher-student ratio and the strength of student groups for lectures and practical and tutorials within the campus. However, the committee did not include any teacher representative in the team which invited criticism from the teachers’ front as most members were administrators.

The Delhi University (DU) has constituted a seven-member committee to study and discuss provisions related to the student-teacher ratio, days after Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh blamed the imbalance between their number for the slip in the National Institutional Ranking Framework’s (NIRF) rankings. The DU slipped by a spot to the 13th position this year in the Ministry of Education’s NIRF rankings issued earlier this month. The committee headed by DU Director South Campus Prakash Singh will also hold discussions on the size of the student groups for lectures, practicals and tutorials to ensure the optimal use of the varsity’s facilities including lab equipment.
“The University of Delhi has constituted a committee to study, discuss and revisit provisions related to the student-teacher ratio and size of the student groups for lectures/practicals/tutorials," read the notification issued by the varsity. The Delhi University is ranked behind city-based Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), which bagged the second and third positions, respectively, in the NIRF under the university category. Prakash Singh, the head of the newly-formed committee, said the body is an outcome of the NIRF ranking. “These exercises are the outcome of that (NIRF) ranking. We have been publishing a lot. You will be surprised to know that our publication ratio is much more than our other universities but we are placed on the 13th. It is also an alarming situation for us," he said.

According to a leading news daily, the university has created two structures that correspond to the distinction between a single discipline honours degree and a multidisciplinary degree. Notably, both degree formats will offer multiple exit options, allowing students to drop out at any time during any year.
