PUBLIC ADVISORY ON PHASING OUT OF HANDWRITTEN PASSPORTS

Government of India Ministry of External Affairs

1. Indian citizens living in India and abroad are advised to urgently replace their handwritten passports with machine-readable passports. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has set a deadline of the 24th November, 2015 for globally phasing out of all non-Machine Readable Passports (MRPs). Thereafter, foreign Governments may deny Visa or entry to any person travelling on a non-Machine Readable Passport.

2. The Government of India has been issuing Machine Readable Passports since 2001. The Passports, however, issued before 2001 and particularly those issued during mid 1990s with a validity of 20 years will fall in the category of non-MRPs. By the end of October 2015, it is estimated that there are approximately 2.50 lakh handwritten passports still in circulation. Approximately 6.20 crore Indians hold valid passports.

3. Indian citizens residing in India and abroad and holding such passports with validity beyond the 24th November 2015 are advised to apply for re-issue of their passports well before the deadline in order to avoid any inconvenience in obtaining valid visa or international travel. Needless to mention, travel on ICAO- compliant machine readable passports will facilitate hassle-free and safe journey.

4. All Passport Issuing Authorities have instituted a simple and fast-track procedure for renewal of passports. For more details related to passport services, website – www.passportindia.gov.in - or the National Call Centre (1800- 258-1800 - Toll Free) may be accessed. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM FRECH EMBASSY...

16 November 2015: Important Information

The French Consulate in Kolkata wishes to inform you that last Friday’s attacks have prompted the French government to take temporary tighter security measures at all points of entry in France. Procedures for entering the country only differs is that now, there are border controls.

The procedure for applying for a Schengen visa at the French Consulate in Kolkata, via the outsourcing company VFS, is maintained and carried out as usual. We wish to emphasize that issuing visas continues as normal and that there have been no changes.

Travelers holding a valid Schengen visa issued by any of the Schengen partners can enter France, as well as those holding a valid Schengen visa issued by any French Consulate or Embassy abroad.

While previously travelers holding a Schengen visa were free to move anywhere within the Schengen area, the difference now is that they will be checked when entering and leaving the French borders, but they can still tour freely within the Schengen zone.

Valid Schengen visas that were issued before 13th November 2015, and those delivered after that date are valid.

No exit visa is necessary to leave France.

THAILAND VISA UPDATE (20-11-2015):

Thailand’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) has confirmed that it will be launching a new six-month multiple-entry tourist visa (METV) on November 13, 2015. The visa, costing INR 10,000 (5,000 baht) will grant travelers multiple entries during a 6-month period, for up to 60 days per entry. All foreign nationals are eligible to apply for METV. There has been speculation about the METV since August this year with travellers and travel trade in India excited about the prospective added convenience.

AUSTRALIAN VISA UPDATE (19-11-2015) :

The Visa Office at the Australian High Commission, New Delhi is currently experiencing a very high volume of Visitor visa lodgements from applicants wishing to travel to Australia from India. As a result, visa processing times are taking longer than usual.

The Australian High Commission strongly advises visa applicants not to make non-refundable travel/airline bookings in anticipation of the grant of a visa within 15 working days of lodgement.

Any such decisions are the sole responsibility of the visa applicant. We recommend instead that you lodge your visa application well ahead of your proposed travel date and only finalise such arrangements after your visa process has been completed.
