KAMRUPA : A GLORIOUS SOJOURN

Kamrup, as history dates back, was the first kingdom of ancient Assam. In present day, it still lives on cherished a symbol of faith and a souvenir of memory for each and every girl who stays or was a part of this hostel. Located in the heart of Delhi University North Campus it is truly a home away from home experience for all the girls who hail from the seven sisters. The hostel is not meant for commercial purposes but at its inception was a noble cause to provide a secure place for all the assamese students who come to the national capital to attain higher education.

Until the 1980's all those who come from Assam had to face a lot of hardships to find the right accommodation in Delhi. But Prof. Mamoni Roisom Goswami (Mamoni Baideu) took up this noble initiative to come up with this abode and christened it as 'Kamrupa'. The initial location of Kamrupa was at Janakpuri, Delhi. Though the girls did suffer commuting issues, the hostel owner arranged for bus facilities to overcome it. Other members of the founding committee without whose noble intentions Kamrupa wouldn't have sustained are Mr. A. P. Singh (then Resident commissioner of Assam Bhawan) , Late Ashok Saikia (then Education Commissioner), Dr. Malaya Khaund (Sahitya Academy Award winner), Niren Deka (then President of ASSAD), Manjita Baruah among many others.

Dr. Taruna Thakur was the first Warden of Kamrupa. After a year and a half this responsibility was transferred to Biju Moni Bora at a rather young age, but there was no doubt that she led the hostel by example.

Sooner or later it was realised that a more ideal location for Kamrupa would be the Delhi University North Campus itself and hence it was shifted from its former location to the present one in Shakti Nagar in September 1997. Some significant contribution were made by Mr. Saroj Deka (OSD Assam Bhawan) and his wife.
