#4 of what I love most about Sikkim- Work-Life Balance

The idea of managing private life and work is always on our minds in the western cultures. We live fast and furious and it becomes really overbearing when we have children and are forced to joggle everything ourselves; especially when our work is in a different country and our families live somewhere else.
One of the things that fascinates me about Sikkimese culture is the position of a family in the society. It is often a case that grandparents, parents and their siblings and children live together under one roof. This is how my family is structured and believe me it is the best system I know – children are being taken care of by people they know and love and you can concentrate on work.
Most of people here work for the government and their working hours are set from 10am to 4pm which leaves still a lot of time to spent time with family and take care of other social obligations. By this I mean attending weddings and funerals. Yes, you got it right. All these rituals are extremely important in this tight-knit society and independent of the distance, weather conditions, etc. people will attend these in masses. For that there is a common understanding – the work is moving on the last position and possibly you will not be coming to the office for some time. A real “work-life balance”, isn’t it?

#3 of what I love about Sikkim - Sikkimese Secularism.

Imagine there is a place where all religions and tribal beliefs live under one roof, coexist peacefully with each other and are being celebrated equally. Sikkimese secularism has a different meaning to one we know in Western cultures and the rest of India and I could experience that many times in the past year.
Sikkimese almanac contains all festivals and religious celebrations of all in the state represented religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam) as well as tribal festivals (Lepcha, Limboo, etc.)
This year I spend Christmas Eve far away from Poland and my dearest Gangtok family and friends came to celebrate it with me, share the Polish traditions and make me feel at home. Despite that we all come from different religious background, they cherrished this day like it would be a festival of their own. Such an amazingly heartwarming experience which left me with a lot of hope and love.
On this occasion I want to wish Happy Losoong and Namsoong to all my dear Friends in Sikkim and those outside.

Here's the second thing about Sikkim that stole my heart. Fascination #2: Momo

If you come to Sikkim you have to try momo at least ones. What are momo? These are dumplings filled either with meat (chicken, buff, pork) or veggies and they are simply delicious. Since I’ve been living in a traditional Sikkimese household momo land on the table at least once a week and at this point, I can tell I am addicted to them. Momo on my mind, momo in my system, momo… It’s a wonder that I haven’t turned into one yet.

Fascination #1: Intonation

The emotionality of Sikkimese people shows in the way they speak. Ok, I agree that Sikkimese Nepali uses quite some “shortcuts” to make the communication efficient, but what makes it really challenging is the way it is spoken.
To sound convincing, you need to put all your emotions into it so i.e. if you say that something is really tasty (mitho) then you don’ t just say mitho you say miiiiiiiiitho. It honestly feels like the amount of “i’s” corresponds to how delicious something is. Don’t say it flat – this is not how it goes.
Oh, and one more thing, not less challenging for a foreigner whose language sounds like series from a Kalashnikov - the letters you pronounce through the nose and from the depth of your chest despite that they might look the same in writing. This really requires a good dose of training. Good luck! :)

Our Story

Hello! We are Sonam and Maria, a Polish-Sikkimese couple who moved to Sikkim exactly one year ago. We both bid adieu to our corporate lives in Amsterdam and decided to search alternate ways of living. Soon after we came to Gangtok, an opportunity came up to renovate a little hotel which belonged to Sonam’s parents and open a tiny Bed & Breakfast – our Bumblebee Guest House.

We started this guesthouse as a small step to explore our bigger dreams of living a simpler life to conspicuously disrupt our work-life balance and concentrate on what really matters – the family, friends and living amongst pure nature. We both are very open, fun-loving and we love meeting new people.

We are absolutely new to the hospitality business, but having amazing friends who have been running their own hotels, we fell in love with the idea of being able to introduce folks to the beautiful town of Gangtok, its people and Sikkimese culture and cuisine. So we would like to invite you to step into our Bumblebee Guest House and enjoy your holidays in the town among the beautiful hilly landscapes.
