When we were to get married, the wedding was fixed at such short notice, that Natasha Alvares Ferreira, but naturally, got worried and said to me “But I don’t know to cook” and I said “Don’t worry, you can learn from my mother” (Definitely I was not getting married to her for her cooking abilities or to keep her as a maid at home!!!).
But it turned out that she not only could cook very well, but also picked up lots of Goan dishes, thus continuing with the legacy of our Goan cuisine at home but best of all - she made some wonderful vegetarian dishes (specially North Indian cuisine) that she actually “converted” my parents into this never-before known cuisine at our house!
Yet, the best has been her innovative skills in trying out newer dishes or sweets or jams - name it and she will conjure up something wonderful!
Today, she surprised me with a cake, baked in a sugarcane bagasse disposal bowl (which was used for the baking)! [Bagasse is the dry pulpy fibrous material that remains after crushing sugarcane stalks to extract their juice. I suggest each one to surf the net to see more uses of this bagasse.]
And I could not resist the temptation to eat a slice and another slice till I finished the cake!!!
