Zhiwaling Heritage Hotel does not just look Bhutanese, it is built the Bhutanese way.

The hotel in the Paro Valley draws from Bhutan’s dzong tradition with thick whitewashed walls, carved timber detailing and a spatial layout organised around courtyards, echoing the fortress-monasteries that's central to the country's civic and spiritual life.

The material integrity is striking: hand-carved timber columns, painted beams with traditional motifs, and textured rather than polished stone surfaces. The visual language is consistent throughout. There is no shift into generic luxury styling.

Courtyards open into one another, corridors frame views of mountains and sky, and the layering of spaces creates a sense of progression. At its heart is a working temple built with reclaimed timber from Gangtey Monastery. Dimly lit with butter lamps, murals, and carved altars and remains in active use for prayer and ceremony.

Some hotels are landmarks, and some hotels are access to landmarks. Think of suburban Mumbai, with access to the sea, the iconic Shivaji Park, where many famous cricketers have swung their willow, small lanes connecting interesting eateries, old clothing stores, and art galleries tucked in buildings. This is where we discovered and fell in love with The Kin.

Move over minimal chic and bring in pop design, sunlight, and art on the walls, and several things to many people. It is already a popular place for the ever-young, by the young for everyone to enjoy.

The Kin is by two siblings, Guneet and Imrun, who took over from their grandfather’s popular hotel, The Parkway, and turned it into a small, boutique hotel of 15 rooms. Wait!
