IITTM student visit to Deo Bagh .

Led by Dr. Chandrashekhar Barua an all India student group from WWF on an Eco Tourism guide training, visited Deo Bagh and met with the owner Uma Devi Jadhav .
The GM Neemrana Deo Bagh - Mr Santosh Sharma explained the environment friendly practices followed by the hotel and took them on a tour of the property . The students interacted with Mrs Jadhav over tea at her residence and got an insight on why the campus is maintained the way it is ! Keeping in mind the needs of the birds and rare trees in the heart of a burgeoning city amidst the heritage structures is a huge task she said .

If you wish to escape Rajasthan’s crowds and explore India’s palatial history beyond the Land of Kings, this is the right place. The Deo Bagh Nature Series.
Part 6.
The heat melts, wilts, dehydrates, dampens the spirit but the date palms on our campus stand tall and bear fruit. In the olden days, land was demarcated by wells, buildings and other such natural features - our village of Bahodapur was full of date palms and wells as it was a water catchment area. Hence the method of irrigation was much like the falaj system in the Gulf region. This feature together with the swaying palms once described the land where we live today. However, today this description only matches the Deo Bagh area, which continues to maintain the same flora since our family’s arrival in Gwalior over 2 centuries ago!
Sadly, almost all these ancient features have now vanished in the surrounding areas - wells have been filled up and palms cut down. The old land demarcation papers with their precise lettering are far superior to the modern day xerox papers as their ink doesn’t fade, but you can’t identify the lands according to them anymore as the trees they use as landmarks have long been cut off.
The family’s handsome elephants have also gone, but their replica in stone now holds the freshly picked jamun. We are grateful for the bountiful harvest from all that surrounds us on this beautiful campus.

Birds of Deo Bagh
Part 3 - Red-Wattled Lapwing.
Did you know Deo Bagh is home to over 30 species of birds? The property provides a green haven in the midst of a bustling city and visitors can often spot these winged creatures securing their nests, taking flight or caring for the younglings!
Posted • Birds of India:

A Red-wattled Lapwing (Vanellus indicus) poses for me on the grounds . It is large wader distinguished with a red fleshy wattle in front of each eye, black tipped red bill and yellow legs, found in West Asia, throughout South Asia. It is quite abundant in India and can be seen in both urban and rural environments.

The local names for the red-wattled lapwing are mainly onomatopoeic in origin “Titodi” in Gujarati, “Titeeri” in Hindi and “Titibha” in Kannada (and in Sanskrit - coming back from my high school lessons, decades back!).
