Built in the Vijayanagara Courtly Style, the Jal Mahal at Evolve Back Hampi is a reflection of Vijayanagara architecture at its luxurious best. Inspired in design by the Water Palace within the Zenana Enclosure, it is located within a water body dotted with water lilies. It is ideally suited for families or couples celebrating a special occasion.

Stories from Evolve Back

The Architect’s Camera: The word camera comes from the Latin for room. The earliest idea of an image-capturing device did not involve glass or a portable mechanical device you could fit in your pocket. The earliest experiments with reproducing an image involved just a darkened room, a small hole in one wall, and the outside world appearing inverted on the wall opposite. Camera obscura. Dark room. That’s where it all begins.

Birds of Hampi | Eurasian Thick-knee

The Eurasian Thick-knee is easy to spot once you notice its large yellow eyes, made for seeing in the dark and giving it a wide, watchful look. Its sandy brown feathers help it blend perfectly into Hampi’s rocky landscape, so it is rarely seen during the day.

At night, however, it makes its presence known. It calls loudly after dusk, with eerie cries that can last for up to 30 minutes and be heard nearly 800 metres away.

When in danger, the chicks lie flat on the ground and become almost invisible, while adults may pretend to be injured to distract predators. Instead of building a proper nest, this bird simply lays its eggs in a shallow scrape on the ground, sometimes lined with small stones or shell pieces.

The Nivasa Palace Suite at Evolve Back Hampi is a refined and spacious retreat inspired by the architectural legacy of the Vijayanagara Empire. Designed with couples in mind, it offers an added sense of seclusion and privacy.

Spanning up to 815 sq. ft., the suite features clearly defined living, sleeping and dining spaces, allowing for a relaxed and unhurried stay. A private balcony with a shallow water-jet pool extends the living area outdoors, while a large double bed crowned with an ornate canopy brings a subtle touch of royal indulgence. The generous en-suite bathroom is equipped with twin washbasins, a deep bathtub and a separate shower cubicle, with direct access to the water-jet pool.

Stone flooring, dark wooden furniture accented with brass, and carefully chosen soft furnishings combine to create an atmosphere that echoes the quiet grandeur of a palace residence.

Art Shastra - showcasing Evolve Back's private art collection and the stories behind the canvas

Harmony and detail – two distinctive artistic values – stand at the heart of the Evolve Back experience where every resort is created with an understanding and ingenuity that befits each location, capturing its soul faithfully – much like a work of art.

As part of the second edition of Art Shastra, we were proud to host a gathering of twenty eminent Indian artists at Evolve Back Coorg, featuring, among others, S.G. Vasudev, Rameshwar Broota, Atin Basak, Goutam Das, Samir Aich and others. These maestros soaked in the magic of their surroundings to create individual masterpieces that now grace our private collection.

Stories from Evolve Back
Tungabhadra: The Backbone of An Empire: Born from the meeting of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers in the high Western Ghats, the Tungabhadra arrives at Hampi after a long journey through Karnataka, widening as she goes. Here, in this boulder-strewn gorge, the river moves with an unhurried certainty. She does not dominate the landscape the way the boulders do. But she persists, broad, reliable, and present.

Birds of Hampi | Long-tailed Shrike

In open fields and scrublands across Asia, you may notice a bold little bird sitting upright on a bush or wire, as if standing guard. This is the Long-tailed Shrike. With its dark mask across the eyes, pale grey back, and a splash of orange on its lower back and sides, it has a smart and striking look.

From its lookout perch, it keeps a close watch on the ground below. The moment it spots movement, it glides down swiftly to catch its prey. Lizards, large insects, small birds, and even rodents are all part of its diet. It usually prefers to live alone, keeping its own feeding area, and even pairs keep their distance from others.

This shrike is not a fussy eater. It has been seen catching fish from small streams and will even tackle small snakes when the opportunity arises.

Stories from Evolve Back

Ilkal: Handlooms Rooted in Heritage - A reflection of our rich heritage, Indian hand-woven textiles have been in existence since time immemorial. With almost every state home to a unique kind of handloom craft, handlooms are indeed a rich legacy of India. Ilkal located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, a hundred kilometres from Hampi, is one such city that is home to the eponymous Ilkal sarees. A visit to Ilkal is a great way to not only seek some retail therapy but more importantly support the weavers who work tirelessly to preserve the legacy of indigenous handlooms.
