“Simhasth Maha Kumbh” is one of the four “Mela” celebrated by largest human gathering on Earth. Simhasth Maha Kumbh is rejoiced by holy dip in the sacred river Kshipra in incent and religious city Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh). The Great Simhasth Kumbh maha parva is based on the celestial line-up of Planets and the Signs of the Zodiac, which occurs every 12 years.
“Kumbh” in its pure English translation means “Pot”, which is referenced from “Samudra Manthan” between Gods and Devils. “Mela” is a Hindi word meaning “Fair”.
Kumbh maha parva is held at four places in India – Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nashik. At Ujjain the Kumbh maha parva is specifically called “Simhasth Maha Kumbh” because the Sun (in Sanskrit Lord “Surya”) is in the Aries (in Sanskrit “Mesh”) and the Jupiter (in Sanskrit Lord “Brashapati”) is in the Leo (in Sanskrit “Simha”). There are 10 yog (combination) which needs to be present so that Simhasth Maha Kumbh can be organized.
This time Simhasth Maha Kumbh maha parva is going to take place from April 22nd 2016 to May 21st 2016 (in Sanskrit Chaitra Shukla Purnima – Vaishakha Shukla Purnima, Vikram Samvat 2073). The Holy dip in River Kshipra is taken on auspicious day at a defined time at which it is believed that “Nectar” from “Kumbh” was dropped in the pious river. It is believed that taking a dip in river Kshipra purify the soul and clear the sins.
Around 5 Crore (50 Million) pilgrims from all walks of life are expected to join and take the holy dip during one month long largest gathering of humans on Earth. The Pilgrims do visit the “Mahakaleshwar” Jyotirlinga for lord Shiva darshan and ancient temples in and around Ujjain City then encompass themselves with the “Satsang” and “Sankirtan” in maha parva Kshetra with Great Sadhus.
Traditionally the Simhasth Kumbh maha parva is celebrated in its full glory by various Akharas, where the “Peshwai” (Procession) begins in all its glory. The heads of Akhara join the Procession on Silver Throne (Simhasanam) on Elephants, it is magnificent with the presence of armed Sadhus on Horses, Camels followed by the Sadhu Sant and Devotees. The Peshwai completes at the “Ram Ghat area” on the banks of River Kshipra.
The City Administration, State Government & Central Government has put additional efforts to create the ground as “Smart City” for the success of festival.
Based on the interest of visitors various “itinerary” are in progress, which includes -
“Ancient Temples”,
“Historical Monuments”,
“Heritage Walk,
Ujjain District as “Agricultural (Biological and Natural) Production & Processing Centre”,
“Educational Hub”, and
“Migratory Bird Spots”.
“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (Sanskrit: वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम) – It is being seen from last few years that many other Sampraday i.e. other than Sanatan Dharma are participating in Simhasth Kumbh with the same glory and harmony as the Sadhu and Pilgrims of the Sanatan Dharma. The efforts are ON to bring the golden days back when Ujjain was the Capital of the region from Egypt to Indonesia. This festival shows the diversity and unity of boundless Indian Culture.
