One of the oldest heritage sites in India, Chausath Yogini Temple is situated on a hilltop in Jabalpur. Built in the 11th century A.D., the temple is the abode of Goddess Durga along with 64 yoginis or shaktis considered to be the different forms of the Goddess. Though the temple has been partially damaged, it speaks greatly of the ancient dynasties that ruled in Jabalpur.Around 150 steep steps lead to the shrine which is at a good height. The complex of the temple consists of 64 shrines in circular motion, one for each yoginis and a main shrine where Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati are seen riding on Nandi, the sacred bull. The temple was constructed during the reign of Kalchuri Dynasty and was mainly made with local granite. Mughal invaders, later on, destroyed and deformed most of the temple. The design of the temple has been kept simple but the idols of yoginis are exquisitely carved, each one depicting a unique posture. The environment at the site is very calm and composing with lush greenery around. Standing at the open-sky courtyard you can witness a panoramic view of the River Narmada and the surrounding landscape. Being the oldest Yogini temple in India, this place is a must visit for all heritage lovers!

Rani Durgavati Memorial And Museum is a popular place of interest in Jabalpur. The place is dedicated to the memory of the great Gond Queen Durgavati. The museum exhibits a fine collection of sculptures, inscriptions and prehistoric relics.
Rani Durgavati Museum was founded in 1964. The sculptures displayed here are excellent and very carefully excavated. Some ancient marvels include :
A 10th century red sandstone sculpture from Tripuri depicts the story of a game played between Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati.
A 36cm high sandstone idol of Durga, a specimen sculpture of Kalchuri art, procured from Doni.
A circa 10th century A.D. sandstone sculpture of Saraswati is also on display in this museum.
The Rani Durgavati Memorial And Museum is a two storied massive building. The first floor exhibits the collection of sculptures, inscriptions and prehistoric traces, while the second floor has letters and photographs relating to Mahatma Gandh

Around a year ago, work took me to Pachmarhi. As usual, our organisation was asked by Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Developement Coporation to write a travel guide to Pachmarhi. This is the first step of an elaborate plan that ends in the declaration of Pachmarhi as a UNESCO World heritage site. To be honest, i have only heard mentions of Pachmarhi and had no idea whatsoever of what surprises awaited me. In my initial research, it was clear that it was a hill station of sorts (come on, having spent a considerable amount of time practically next door to Darjeeling, the tag ‘of sorts’ is only fair). What interested me more were the hills on which Pachmarhi was located – the Satpuras.

The landscape is dominated by rugged hills, plunging ravines, and ancient monoliths that resemble the tough hide of some colossal primeval beast deep in an eternal slumber. Dense forest covers the land and paints it in swathes of a thousand shades of green, broken only by the deep brown of some of the most ancient rocks known to mankind. At every possible point in this landscape, mountain streams tumble down the steep slopes to give rise to cascading waterfalls.

Although the main photo-journal of my Pachmarhi trip will come later, i could not resist giving a standalone mention to one of Pachmarhi’s most daunting attractions – the Chauragarh Temple. Located on top of the Chauragarh Peak,at an altitude of 1,330 m, the temple can be accessed after a 3.6 km ling trek. Just when you are thinking that the three-and-a-half odd kms is not really a big deal, let me just tell you that the last kilometer is basically 1,380 steps cut on the sheer rock face.

Bastar is a tribal region in Chhattisgarh, blessed with an exceptional scenic beauty that beckons the lovers of nature to explore the forests, waterfalls, wildlife, ancient temples, tribal dances and music. Located at a distance of 264 km from Raipur, Bastar is one of the most significant eco-friendly destinations of the country. It has plenty to offer to its visitors with its valuable tribal art and culture that lie in and around the lush green city of Jagdalpur. One can choose from National Parks, waterfalls, natural caves, palaces, museums and places of religious significance.

The Bastar Palace located in Jagdalpur is a historical monument which has an impressive art and architectural work with exquisite carvings and engravings on walls and ceilings. Bastar Palace was built by the rulers of Bastar and speaks of many legends of gallantry and heroism of these kings.

The Bhoromdeo Temple is adorned with magnificently carved erotic sculptures. It also has a Shiva Lingam which is a striking piece of architecture. The Danteshwari Temple is an ancient temple of Devi Danteshwari and is said to be one of the 52 sacred Shakti peethas of the Hindu Mythology. The temple attracts tourists throughout the year, especially during the festival of Dusshera.

Located in the Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, madan mahal can be easily accessible by local transport in Jabalpur city. It is located on the top of the hill and is based on a single stone. In the earlier days it acts the watch tower against the enemies.Madan Mahal fort is situated in Jabalpur City of Madhya Pradesh. It is approximately 515 meters above the ground.During the Gondwana period it acts as a watch tower for the attackers and defenders coming to conquer the Gondwana rulers. The fort of Madan Mahal is situated on the south-western part of the modern city of Jabalpur.

History of Madan Mahal : This fort was the pleasure palace for Madan Singh, the tenth Gond King and son of Rani Durgawati. During her reign, the fort was used as a watchtower. The architecturally designed rooms in front of the main structure probably lodged the military troops of the rulers who stayed here. The maintenance and protection of this historical monument has been undertaken by Archaeological Survey of India.

Tilwara Ghat is one of the most important historic places of Jabalpur as well as India. This ghat is situated at the banks of Narmada River at 12 km from Jabalpur’s Railway Station. This place is famous as the site where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were immersed. Due to this there is also a ‘Gandhi Smarak’ being built in the place to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi. The place has also been the venue for the opening session of Tripuri Congress in 1939.

Apart from being a ghat, Tilwara is a pilgrimage centre as well. The popular Lord Shiva Temple known as the Tilwadeshwar Temple is also located here. There are many other temples too in the place like the Mala Devi Mandira, Pisan Hari Jain Temples, and the Roopnath Lingam Temple. The ‘Marble Rocks’ is also situated nearby this ghat along with sites like Parjyat Tank, Bargi Dam and the Lamheta Ghat.

The Rani Durgavati Museum of Jabalpur is a memorial built in 1964 to commemorate Queen Durgavati. Queen Durgavati was known as a symbol of martyrdom and self-sacrifice during her time. To present the valour and pride of this queen, a stone replica of Goddess Durga has been constructed inside this museum.

The museum also comprises a wing that houses artefacts and photos belonging to Mahatma Gandhi. The museum is also rich in ancient cultural relics, primitive lettering and many more intriguing articles. The most popular attractions of this museum include a red sandstone replica portraying Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati engaged in a game of Chausar. Another one includes a statue of Goddess Durga brought from a place called Doni. The museum also comprises a sandstone replica of Goddess Saraswati along with an idol of Goddess ‘Yogini’.
