The historical city of Patan is about 70 miles northeast of Jaipur,on the Kotputli Sikar road, off the National Highway 8, the road which connects Jaipur and Delhi. The palace is well-located with an unhindered birds-eye view of the 13th century ancestral fort and another palace called Badal Mahal which stands loftily at an imposing 2000 ft above sea level. ajasthan. In the 12th century, it became the centre of a minor state called Tanwarawati or Torawati (after Tanwar/Tomar the clan name) ruled by the Tomara clan. The chief of the clan is the Rao of Patan, and he is considered to be the direct in descent from the last Hindu Emperor Anang Pal Tomar II the ruler of Delhi before Prithviraj Chauhan. The family came and built the impregnable fort at Patan and also the Badalgarh Mahal, halfway up the mountain in the 13th century. Patan Mahal, home to Rao Digvijay Singh, is situated on the foot hills. He has now opened his home to the discerning traveler. The Patan Mahal is a heritage hotel with 18 rooms with all modern amenities, maintaining it’s original character. Patan is the site of one of the last great battles in Indian history. Called the Battle of Patan, it saw the Maratha Confedaracy pitted against the Rajputs of Jaipur and their Mughal allies in 1790. You can read more about the battle on Wikipedia.

Patan is a historical city with structures dating back to the early 1200s. The fort, perched atop the Aravalli hill like a crown, suggests its primary defensive purpose, visible from kilometers away.

Badal Mahal, dating from multiple centuries, features construction techniques indicating parts contemporary with the fort and others from the 1500s. The city and these structures were fortified by a defensive wall, remnants of which still endure. Badal Mahal contains three water reservoirs, with two still holding water. The filtration system is so advanced that the water remains crystal clear year-round.

Badal Mahal bears scars from the Battle of Patan, the last cavalry battle fought on June 20, 1790, between three noble kingdoms. This battle earned Patan Fort the title “unconquerable and impregnable” by General Benoît de Boigne, who compared it to the Rock of Gibraltar. De Boigne’s formidable firepower led to the defeat and subsequent move to the now Patan Mahal.

In the past decade, Patan Mahal has been converted into a palace hotel, showcasing Mughal architectural influences. A particular fresco is likely influenced by the Battle of Patan. The conversion preserved the mahal’s original structure while transforming it into a heritage hotel.
