The main gate was locked, as it has been every night for two hundred years. Nobody signed the register. Nobody was seen. But there were small footprints across the courtyard, and Room 108 made up and spotless the evening before, was found with the sheets thrown back, marigold petals across the bed, a little wooden cow on the pillow, and a flute left behind.
He was gone before sunrise.
We have decided not to investigate further.
Some guests arrive without a booking and leave without a word, and this one has been doing it for a very long time. On Janmashtami, we like to think he still passes through the old houses of this city the way he once did through Gokul, quietly, mischievously, and always where the butter is.
May he find his way into your home too. May your year be full of laughter, of small mischief, of sweetness you didn’t plan for, and of the kind of joy that arrives unannounced and stays long after.
Happy Janmashtami from all of us at Diggi Palace 🦚
