Gratitude and growth go hand in hand for Ajai Chitara as he reflects on his journey with us that unfolded in ‘Traditions in Transition’ art residency programme by Aayam Art Residency in association with Kalaneri Art Gallery.

From exploring Jaipur’s vibrant culture to immersing himself in a blend of traditional and modern techniques, he embraced every facet of the residency. Ajai gained new perspectives not only on art, but on the creative community, finding inspiration in how contemporary practices melded with the revered Mata-ni-Pachedi tradition.

Set within the quiet, nature-filled surroundings of Aayam Art Residency, Tania Fatnani reflects on a residency experience shaped not just by practice, but by environment.

From mornings filled with birdsong to unexpected sightings of peacocks, the space offered a rare sense of calm — allowing her to step outside the conventional studio and engage with her work in an entirely new way. Working amidst nature, something she had not explored before, became an experience of both ease and discovery.

Day 4 at Traditions in Transition — where tradition arrives, and ideas begin to take shape.

The day began with the arrival of Dilip Chitara, bringing with him the legacy of the Mata-ni-Pachedi tradition into the evolving ecosystem of the residency at Kalaneri Art Gallery.

As artists gathered, the space turned into a confluence of practices — conversations flowed, perspectives were exchanged, and soon after, each artist returned to their individual works, continuing to develop ideas that have been steadily taking form through the week.

In parallel, the Textile Art Workshop carried a strong creative momentum. Participants moved beyond observation into application — exploring concepts of material, texture, folding, and transformation, and translating them into their own tactile expressions under guided mentorship.

From welcoming a centuries-old tradition to witnessing contemporary interpretations unfold through hands-on learning, Day 4 reflected the very essence of the residency — a space where heritage and experimentation coexist.

As the programme moves towards its final day, what remains is not just the work on display, but the ideas, processes, and exchanges that continue to shape it.

Day 2 of Jaipur’s FIRST Private Art Residency – Traditions in Transition – where ideas don’t just stay on canvas, they come alive through process, people, and dialogue. 🗣️ 🖼️

At Kalaneri Art Gallery, the residency moved deeper into its rhythm as artists began developing their individual works — translating concepts into evolving visual narratives.

Inside the studio, the Printmaking Workshop with Narendra Kumar Sain unfolded as a fully immersive experience. Participants explored the nuances of printmaking, experimenting with techniques and understanding the discipline through a hands-on process guided by the artist.

As the day came to a close, the space transformed into a circle of exchange — an impromptu gathering of artists, patrons, and art lovers engaging in thoughtful conversations around contemporary art practices, shared perspectives, and the collective role of creative expression today.

Day 2 was not just about making art — it was about experiencing it, questioning it, and shaping it together.

Traditions are often spoken about as if they belong only to the past. In reality, they are constantly being reworked, questioned, and reshaped by the people who continue to practice them.

At Aayam Residency, the “Traditions in Transition” National Multidisciplinary Art Residency, curated by Kalaneri Art Gallery‘s Director Mrs Saumya Sharma with a young budding art curator , brings together artists who engage with traditional Indian visual languages in diverse ways.

Some artists work closely with inherited practices such as folk painting and textile traditions, while others draw from symbols, forms, and ideas rooted in cultural memory, reinterpreting them through contemporary materials and approaches.

Rather than viewing tradition as something fixed, ‘Traditions in Transition’ approaches it as something alive — a space where older visual languages encounter present-day thinking and gradually evolve into new artistic expressions.

Over the course of the residency at Kalaneri, visitors will be able to experience the artists’ processes through open studios, demonstrations, conversations, and workshops.

Introducing Aayām Residency — the dedicated artist accommodation within the premises of Kalaneri.

Designed to host visiting artists, curators, and creative practitioners, Aayam Residency offers a comfortable and inspiring environment for those participating in exhibitions, residencies, and cultural programmes at Kalaneri Art Gallery.

For the “Traditions in Transition” National Multidisciplinary Art Residency, Aayām Residency will host the participating artists — becoming the space where conversations continue after studio hours, where ideas are exchanged, and where collaborations begin to take shape.

A national multidisciplinary artist residency in Jaipur exploring contemporary interpretations of Indian artistic traditions.

Kalaneri Art Gallery, in collaboration with Aayām Residency, presents “Traditions in Transition.”

From 14–19 March 2026, the gallery will transform into an open studio environment, bringing together artists from across India working in diverse mediums to explore how traditional visual languages continue to evolve within contemporary art practices.

Throughout the residency, visitors will have the opportunity to observe artists in process, engage with their ideas, and participate in workshops, live demonstrations, and artist talks that reveal the evolving relationship between tradition and contemporary expression.

Curated by .kalaneri assisted by a thriving young art curator in the making, the programme encourages dialogue between inherited artistic practices and present-day creative thinking.

The residency will culminate in a final showcase of works created during the programme, offering audiences a glimpse into both the artistic journey and the outcomes that emerge from this week of exploration.

Hosted at Kalaneri’s Art Centre based at JLN Marg in Jaipur, this initiative invites artists, students, collectors, and art enthusiasts to witness creativity in motion.

A week of artistic exchange, learning, and conversation awaits.
