General Amar Singh Kanota was at the centre of the golden days of Polo, when it was the highlight of military training for elite Cavalry Officers, an era that ended with the armistice of World War 1 and when horses were replaced with armoured tanks.
The General wrote of the sophistication and complexity of the sport in his daily diaries (which he kept from 1898 to 1942). His guiding hand helped cultivate future greats of the sport, including Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II.
With this tournament we honour one of the many legacies of General Amar Singh Kanota.

“...The bathroom was quite a small one and the table was an awful thing. It was a small round rickety thing with room barely enough to put my diary and ink pen on... The others never would get me a table though I begged of them..... They were an idle lot indeed. They never realised how much I wanted this piece of furniture.

[The Maharaja of Alwar... said we were cramped up and that I can come up in the house... I was very happy indeed. There was a fine table and i enjoyed writing to my heart’s content...”

For such a man, having adequate space, quiet and light to read, think and write was paramount. The library at Castle Kanota was Amar Singh’s haven, but in addition he maintained a personal suite room in the tykhana or basement, where he often spent the nights when he was in the mood.

In recreating Amar Singh’s life at General Amar Singh Kanota Library and Museum, through his objects and the spaces he inhabited the distinction between the library and private suite enables an exploration of the layered aspects of his life.
