Rudyard Kipling wrote this in 1887, while travelling through Rajputana and stopping in Jeypore. He had plenty to say about the city — its wide streets, its architecture, and its wonderfully chaotic mix of old and new.

Some things, it seems, haven’t changed much. Today, that same mix spills into the streets around our 300-year-old home in the Walled City, where old and new, local and visitor, have a habit of finding their way together.

Jal Mahal — The Floating Palace

Set in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, along the road to Amer, Jal Mahal was built in the 18th century as a royal hunting lodge. When the lake is full, four of its five storeys disappear beneath the water, leaving the upper level and its chhatris floating above the lake.

The palace is generally closed to visitors, but you can still get a beautiful view of it from the lakeside — especially when the Aravallis are glowing and the sun is on its way down.

One of Jaipur’s best views, and one you don’t need a palace pass to enjoy…

There’s more to Jaipur than the Pink City.

Just outside Amer Fort, you’ll find Panna Meena Kund — a 16th-century step well.

The criss-crossing steps might look like a work of art, but there’s plenty of function behind the geometry. They were designed to lead people down to the water as its level changed, while the kund itself was a place to collect water, escape the heat and catch up with the community.

There’s always another story, another detail, another piece of architecture waiting around the corner.
