Suryagarh, Jaisalmer is your gateway to the Thar Desert

We believe we are not just a hotel, but represent a unique way of life, carefully preserving the traditions of our past yet framing them in a modern idiom. The hotel takes the path less travelled and discovers with you, secrets of a land that have been long shrouded in myth and legend. With great consideration to your comfort, our particular brand of hospitality is intuitive and genuine.

In the midst of the Thar, Suryagarh’s gardens appear almost like a beautiful contradiction.

Fragrant frangipani, flowering shrubs and thick lawns unfold between sculptural courtyards, traditional stone pavilions and a bawdi. Peacocks wander through the Champa Garden, vegetables and herbs rise from the earth in our Organic Garden, and after dark, countless tea lights turn the Lake Garden into a constellation of its own.

Each garden has its particular mood, some made for quiet seclusion, others for long lunches, music and celebration. Together, they bring the outside in and reveal an unexpectedly verdant side of desert life.

Mornings at Suryagarh begin to the music of the desert.

Close your eyes and let the algoza mesmerise you. A traditional double flute, played with one pipe carrying the melody and the other holding a continuous drone, its haunting notes have travelled across the Thar for generations.

Beyond our walls, paths less travelled lead into a landscape shaped by myth and legend, where ancient temples, abandoned settlements and sweeping dunes reveal the desert’s many secrets.

Every evening, as the sun slips below the horizon, the Manganiyars share music drawn from Sufi traditions and the old caravan routes that once connected Rajasthan with Sindh, Punjab and lands farther west.

Here is a taste of Anth Bahar Di Khabar Na Kazi, a composition drawn from the poetry of the great Bulleh Shah. Written in the Kafi tradition, the song marvels at the boundlessness of divine creation while suggesting that its deepest mysteries cannot be understood through religious authority alone. In deceptively simple verse, Bulleh Shah champions tolerance and compassion while challenging the orthodoxy of his time.

Centuries later, his words continue their journey through the desert.

An oasis overlooking the ruins of Kuldhara, catches the last light as live music drifts across the desert and food arrives fresh from the fire.

The sky moves through a succession of colours, animals occasionally appear at the watering hole and, for a little while, time feels beautifully suspended.

A quiet kind of magic and an end-of-day celebration that belongs entirely to the Thar.

Congratulations Sumer Singh Bhati Ji on receiving the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Rangeland Restoration Award 2026.

A traditional camel herder, environmentalist and co-founder of the ‘Oran Bachao’ movement, Sumer Ji has devoted his life to protecting Rajasthan’s Orans, the sacred grasslands that sustain pastoral communities, livestock, wildlife and cultural memory.

As a UNCCD-accredited (prov.) civil society organisation, it has been our privilege to collaborate with him across projects centred on water conservation, grassland restoration, heritage conservation, women empowerment and responsible tourism.

THE ORAN BACHAO MOVEMENT

A series of intergenerational workshops facilitated by Sumer Singh Bhati Ji, Parth Jagani ji, Fearless Foundation and us brought together the women of the Oran Bachao Movement for conversations about land, water, famine, ritual and resilience.

Their voices became the starting point for several of our initiatives, including the revival of beris, community murals and efforts to strengthen Jaisalmer’s craft clusters.

BERI REVIVAL

In the heart of Degrai Oran, one of Rajasthan’s largest sacred groves, stands Maniyara Tala, a 500-year-old beri, or traditional community well. Its revival was a community-led initiative to restore this vital source of water in Sanwata village.

Today, the restored beri supports more than 6,000 people across 10 villages and 36 communities, as well as nearly 50,000 cattle and 5,000 camels.

MURAL OF ABUNDANCE

Within Jaisalmer Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the walls of Annapurna Bhandar, an ancient granary became the canvas for a new story.

A collective act of art-making, the Mural of Abundance honours the indigenous knowledge, labour and resilience of generations of women from the Orans and the Oran Bachao Movement.

CTD…

…The mural brings their relationship with land, water and abundance into one of Jaisalmer’s most historic spaces, ensuring their stories are seen and remembered.

Our Thar Dinner retraces the passage of merchants and travellers who crossed the desert along the ancient Silk Route, combining their flavours, techniques and traditions into a celebratory feast.

Beneath tasselled canopies and a sky full of stars, local ingredients, rustic flavours and dishes made for sharing arrive at the table evoking the spirit of the journeys that inspired them.
