There is one too many temples, forts and palaces in Rajasthan to cater to a history enthused traveller in Rajasthan. But Osian is as refreshing as finding an oasis in a desert. Quite literally! This small hamlet, built around an oasis in the Thar Desert, is often lost between the mighty dunes (and monuments) of Jodhpur. It houses 16 beautifully decorated Buddhist and Jain temples built between 8th to 12th centuries.

The temples, most popular of which are the Sachiya Mata Temple, Mahaveera Jain Temple and the Sun Temple, are a sight to behold with ornate pillars and walls and sculptures resembling those of the popular Khajuraho.

Mehrangarh Fort - Watch the Blue City from this fort in Rajasthan.

Overlooking the Blue City of Jodhpur from a height from 125 meters, Mehrangarh Fort was commissioned back in 1460 by Rao Jodha. This rigid yet fascinating structure has been featured in many movies, like The Dark Knight Rises. The fort has many palaces that flaunt immaculate carving and the signature interiors of the regal Rajasthan in the past.

Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput chief of the Rathore clan. Jodha founded the state of Marwar. The capital was shifted to Jodhpur from Mandore during the rule of Jodha. Since the city was strategically located, it enhanced the trade between other states.

The merchants in this region are know as Marwaris. The Gorwar region of Marwar was populated by Oswal Jains. The state of Marwar merged into into India in 1956. Wheat and chilies are the main crops of Jodhpur. Jodhpur has training center for Indian Army. Air Force and Border Security Force.
