Tonight at Mannapaapu Mane - a mesmerizing puppetry show by K.V. Ramesh and his team. They have performed in Lahore, Paris, Dubai and Guiyang and now in Mala :)

Bombe aata is an art form perhaps even older than yakshagana, certainly with shared heritage. Narrative and stories are very similar, the medium lending itself to some differences.

Ramesh is a master puppeteer whose fascination with puppets began when he was in class 6. By the time he finished school, he was modelling his own simple puppets from wood and wire and putting on little shows. Today he carves, paints, clothes and adorns every character himself - giving him extraordinary control over their movement and expression. The sizes and forms are built for best use by his hands. This continuity from carving to performing lends a subtle, masterful depth in depicting gentle sways, stomping feet, angry chases, yearning hearts, especially when watching from a slight distance. No wonder he won the 'Best Traditional Puppet Performer' at the 14th International Puppet Festival held in Prague.

He is now working on creating "Yakshaputalli Bombemane" is Kasargod - a gurukul, theatre, library, performance space and museum for puppetry arts.
