What you see here is a traditional hand powered mill . In this region it’s known as “Chakki” or “Chakiya” .
It is an ancient tool, but is still used today in rural areas to grind flour, pulses, or spices 🌾
In our example Auntie is splitting Urad Dal.
How it works: The Chakki consists of two round stone plates - the lower one fixed, the upper one can be rotated via a handle (stick). There is a hole in the upper stone plate. That is where the whole lentils are placed. The dal is split as it passes between the rotating stone slabs.

Benefits: It is a soft and slow way of preserving the grain’s and pulse’s fibre, vitamins and natural aroma. Modern machines in nowadays factories work with high temperatures, which strips the grains and pulses of their natural oils and nutrients. And of course: Power-cut resistant 😜

It looks easy, but it is actually quite an act of rhythm and coordination. Try it our yourself 😁

Khajuraho is surrounded by national parks, jungle area and many nearby natural wonders🌴🌿🌳.
One well-known natural spectacle close to Khajuraho are the Raneh Falls 🌊.
What makes them special is that these waterfalls have their own unique charm in every season. During dry periods, the Raneh Falls resemble a canyon—hence also the nickname „Mini Grand Canyon“. During the drier seasons, you can get a good view of the waterfalls, which drop up to 30 meters in some places. During the monsoon season, however, the waterfalls turn into rushing streams that fill almost the entire canyon. Visit Khajuraho and see it for yourself 😊. Right now it’s still hot and dry. But Monsoon 💦 is just around the corner..

Last year, we introduced you to a vegetable that has many names. Depending on the region, it’s known by different names: Rerua, Tori, Turai, Gilki, Ridge Gourd, Sponge Gourd...🥒
We’ve also hinted that this vegetable isn’t just for eating—it has a special feature. After a year, we’re finally revealing the secret (yes, it took us a while😁).
This vegetable has a sponge-like structure inside. If you let it ripen longer and then dry it in the sun, the inside can be used as a sponge.🧽 For example, for washing dishes or for showering as a body sponge. In fact, these sponges are commonly known as loofah sponges (or luffa sponge) and can also be purchased in stores.
We think this vegetable is pretty cool. But to be honest and transparent: In order to be able to use these sponges consistently in our restaurant, we still need to work a bit on our gardening skills and figure out how to best turn this gourd into a nice loofah sponge.

Today is Somvati Amavasya. Amavasya means new moon. Amavasya that falls on a Monday is called Somvati Amavasya (Monday = somvar). Today many women in the village performed the Peeple Tree Puja. In this puja the women worship Shiva, Parvati, and the peepal tree to seek marital harmony, longevity for their husbands, and ancestral blessings. The peepal tree holds immense significance as it is believed to house the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh). During this puja, the following rituals are performed, among others: lighting a ghee lamp, tying a thread around the tree trunk, circumbulating the tree 108 times while offering a gift to the tree after each lap (e.g., fruit, puffed rice, sesame balls). These gifts are often distributed to the poor later on.

We went to Mahoba to get some bamboo for future projects. Mahoba is a city located about 75 km from Khajuraho and it‘s known for its bamboo market.

We‘ll show you what we’re going to do with the bamboo after our summer break. It’s too hot to work in the sun during the day for the next two months.

If you’re interested to volunteer at our place in Khajuraho you can contact us. From July there will be possibilities.
