If you want to take a walk down the history of Fort Kochi, a visit to St. Francis Church is a must! As one of the oldest churches built by the Europeans in India, the church has witnessed centuries of change, as the region went through Portuguese, Dutch and British eras. Built in 1503, the original church was a wooden structure dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. However, the church underwent multiple reconstructions over the years and around, 1886 during the British rule, the church was renamed and rebuilt to its present structure. The famous Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama was buried in St. Francis Church in 1524. And even though his remains were later taken to Portugal, the church still has the burial spot and the tombstone inside, which makes it a must-visit spot.

If you’re wondering, how the fishermen in Kochi get their hands on their daily fresh catch, head to the Chinese Fishing Nets just a few minutes away from Hana’s Haven Holiday Inn. The Chinese Fishing Nets or ‘Cheenavala’ (in Malayalam) are believed to have been introduced to Kochi by the Chinese explorer Zheng He between 1350 and 1450 AD. Operated by a team of up to six fishermen, each of these structures is at least 10 mtrs high and comprises of a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea.
For the best view of these nets, head to the Vasco Da Gama Square near Fort Kochi beach during the early hours of the morning.

Recognised as one of the heritage structures of Kerala, this church is one of the finest and most impressive churches in India. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1558, the church has undergone various structural changes and has even been demolished and reconstructed, over the centuries. It was in 1905 that the church as it appears today was consecrated. Today, the church has become a must-see destination in Fort Kochi.

Aranmula Snake Boat Race is the oldest river boat festival of Kerala, and is more of a ritual than an actual race. The majestic snake boats that take part in the event dedicated to Lord Parthasarathy (Lord Krishna) are known as Palliyodams. These beautifully decorated boats have men holding sequined parasols that row through the race course singing traditional songs by the oarsmen onboard.
