Kochi’s Own “Kayikkas Biriyani”

V.K. Kayee, popularly known as Kayikka started his career as a cook and waiter in British army in 1940s. Later he started working as a waiter in Bombay hotel, Cochin. In the year 1948 he started a tea stall in Mattancherry. He converted it into a proper restaurant by the name Kayees Rahmathulla hotel in 1951. Everyday people from all across line up here to have a taste of their delectable biryani Which was very delicious. Famous personalities including celebrities like Mammootty, M.F. Hussain, Kunchakko Boban etc were great fan of Kayikka’s Biriyani . After Kayikka’s death in 1999, his descendants run this hotel just as it was in its heyday. Kayees Rahmathulla hotel also has a catering service (Kayees) which seems to be very popular. Now the old hotel at Mattancherry is demolished and the hotel is shifed to other building near to the old hotel. Currently Kayees Rahmathulla hotel operate in two locations – The original hotel in Mattancherry and other hotel near Durbar Hall Ground, Ernakulam.
