Kodaikanal Lake, also known as Kodai Lake is a manmade lake located in the Kodaikanal city in Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, India. Sir Vere Henry Levinge, The then Collector of Madurai, was instrumental in creating the lake in 1863, amidst the Kodaikanal town which was developed by the British and early missionaries from USA. The lake is said to be Kodaikanal's most popular geographic landmark and tourist attraction.
Over the years a boat club, boathouse and boat service (with rowing boats and pedaling boats and a public ferry) for the public and tourists has become fully functional and is of aesthetic significance for tourism. Boat Pageant and Flower Shows are a regular feature in the summer season which attracts tourists.

Kodaikanal enjoys the reputation of being the most favored honeymoon spot for the newly wedded couples and to make a new start of life with a bang, nevertheless, people would find it hard to swallow to know that this beautiful and refreshing hill stations has concealed in its belly one such a spot which has witnessed numerous suicides in the past. The valley here is deep and the depth measures to be more than 5000 feet. Thus, this knowledge is in itself a proof that any one falling from such height will have no prospects to come back alive. For this reason it has been barricaded now for the safety of tourists. Nevertheless, this is a very picture perfect and enchanting site that offers the panoramic view of the nearby plains, valleys, hills and dam called as vaigai. Nevertheless, it would be wise to make a visit to this point after 10 AM in morning and one should be on way back before the clock strikes 3 PM as during the early hours of mornings and late at eventides, the thick clouds of mist engulf the whole of ambience. Another added attraction here can be seen in form of herds of hopping monkeys that throng the spot.

Tourist lost in Guna Cave ‘dead’

By Express News Service - KODIKANAL 30th July 2012 11:24 AM
A tourist from Ramanathapuram who went missing inside the Guna Cave near here was on Sunday declared dead by police after sustained rescue efforts turned out to be in vain.

The victim, Karthick (23), an electrician, arrived in Kodaikanal along with six of his friends for a picnic, on Saturday, police sources said.

After visiting other tourist spots, the friends reached Guna Cave.

Though entry into the cave has been restricted by the Forest Department, Karthick and his friends went inside.

However, after emerging from the cave, Karthick told his friends that he lost his mobile phone inside.

Asking them to wait outside, Karthick went in again to search for his phone.

As there was no sign of Karthick even after a long time passed, they went in after him but could not trace him. They subsequently informed forest officials.

A police team led by Inspector Seemaichamy, along with personnel from the forest and fire departments, then launched a search operation at noon. Roadside vendors in the vicinity also pitched in, but by evening, with visibility diminishing, the search yielded no fruit.

The search operation resumed on Sunday morning and went on, in vain, till noon, after which police declared that Karthick was dead. His parents were also informed.

Over 16 bodies of persons who went missing in the Guna Cave have not been recovered till date, police sources said.

Police said they searched to the maximum extent possible inside the tricky cave, but to no avail.
