Hi everyone.....let"s continue our journey through the history of Andaman &Nicobar Islands....chronologically...

1569 A.D. Ceasare Federici [ an Italian merchant and traveler ] referred about Andaman's and depicted an account of terrible plight of the crew involed in the ship wreck in Andaman in which all crew were killed.

May 1688 William Dampier ( the first Englishman to explore parts of what is today Australia, and the first person to circumnavigate the world three times) was stranded in Great Nicobar and lived there for some time.

16.01.1711 Two Jesuits viz. P. Faure and P. Bonnet visited Great Nicobar. After two years six months, they were killed at Camorta Island.

08.09.1754 A Danish expedition started from Tranquebar to form a colony in Nicobar Island and Lt. Tanck was I/c.

01.01.1756 Danish Lt. Tanck took possession of Great Nicobar in the name of King of Denmark.

CELLULAR JAIL
11.01.1892 Col. Thomas Cadell. V.C. Supdt of Port Blair
approved the plan of Cellular Jail. It was decided to adopt the plan of Cannanore Jail for the construction of Cellular Jail....it was also suggested to construct double storied barracks for want of level ground and there should be only one main entrance.

06.03.1893 Col. N.M.T. Horsford, Superintendent of Port Blair submitted the estimate and plans[prepared by sub- engineer Mr. Mc. Quillen ] to the Secretary to the Govt. of India.

It was estimated that nearly 206 lakhs of bricks would be required for the construction and it would take 5 years to complete the construction work.

29.07.1893 the construction of Cellular Jail was sanctioned.

1898 By the beginning of the year about 400 cells were ready for occupation

Concrete in foundation 19609 c.ft.
Brick work 144593 c.ft.
Ashlar 715 c.ft.
Wood work 263 c.ft.
Iron work 110382 lbs
Pointing tuck 1000 sq. ft.
Painting 700 sq. ft.
White washing 22616 sq.ft.
Collaring 2900 sq. ft.

Labor employed:
Coolies 48725
Artificers 16083
Petty officers 2305

* an average of about 2350 of all classes per working day.

On 11.01.1901 the Central Tower building was started.
