The Amber Journey

Mr.Rajpal Khullar and Mr.Sudesh Kumar Khullar (Brothers), started the Restaurant operation with a small coffee house at Shyambazar 5 Point Crossing, in the year 1950 at Kolkata. In 1954, they started a Boarding House having 16 Rooms in Waterloo Street, Kolkata. All the rooms of the Boarding House were booked by the famous film star Late Raj Kapoor for his unit as he was going to shoot his film Jagte Raho.

In 1956, the Khullars started their first Restaurant, very near to the Boarding house, called Sagar Restaurant with forty-five seats, serving only typical North Indian food (Curries and Kababs). Sagar was a success from day one and the people had to wait a long time to get seats.

Seeing the response and success of Sagar, and the popularity of the Indian food, the Khullars renovated an old Bar. Located just opposite to their boarding house, it was converted into a Bar-cum-Restaurant and was named Amber. Established in 1959, the Amber started with a 40-seater restaurant and a 50-seater bar. It can now seats nearly 300 guests.

Today in its 60th year, Amber continues to take its legacy forward and continues to and serve a food experience that the people of the city have embraced as their own.
