According to Ayurveda the living body is composed of 5 basic elemental substances named as akasa ( ether ) vayu ( air) teja( fire)jala(water)and prithvi(earth).These five physical elements constitute the three essential bio components of the living body which are named as the tridoshas . ie vatha , pitha , kapha. The gross structure of the body built up by Kapha, Entire physical phenomenon including the biochemical and metabolic activities and endocrine functions attribute pitha and physical activities , motion , nerve functions by Vatha . vatha is considered as the leader. The tridoshas have contradictory physical and physiological characters and so they are capable of antagonizing the activities of each other thus maintaining an inherent equilibrium. The total spectrum of their physical and physiological characters is reflected in the final constitutional set up of a man which is known as Dosha prakruthi or psychosomatic constitution of a particular individual. There are three types of dosha prakruthies vatika , paithika and kaphaja . Ayurveda recognizes this three basic human types in which the total living population can be classified
The principle of the ayurvedic approach to treat the diseases consists of two major procedures SODHANA( purification therapy, the panchakarma ) and SAMANA(pacification).Sodhana is the radical treatment of disease and iks supposed to eradicate or eliminate the vitiated doshas from the body thus completely curing the disease .Samana is the conservative measures like lenghana ( fasting ) pachana ( digestion)by administration of appropriate drugs designed for subsiding or alleviating the vitiated doshas thus preventing temporarily or subsiding a disease .In the present context we are mainly concerned with samsodhana treatment .It is believed that the disease cured by samasodhana treatment never relapse while the disease cured bu samana treatment may recur .However the comprehensive treatment of a disease has to consist of both these types of treatments ie samsodhana and samsamana at appropriate times
Rasayana therapy of Ayurveda essentially refers to the process of tissue nourishment and rejuvenation .Rasayana effect retards ageing and prolongs life .Rasayana remedies encompasses a range of drugs diets treatments life style interventions which promote nutritional status of the body and help the formation of good qualities of the body. There areb two types of Rasayana therapy. OUT DOOOR regimen and IN DOOR regimen
