Khetiyo

Khetiyo Nestled in Corbett's Mandal River Valley, is a piece of land that takes one back to the days of pure wilderness and leaves one spellbound! - Khetiyo

There s a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is a society, where none intrudes,
By the gushing river, and music in its roar,
I love not man the less, but Nature more. The vision behind this project is to bring back the romanticism of the untamed wild, provide an insight into the delicate balance based on natural diversity. Nestled in the Mandal Valley, is

a piece of land that takes one back to the days of pure wilderness and leaves one spellbound! The property is located on the banks of the river Mandal. This village was abandoned 45 years ago and was reclaimed by the wild. We stumbled upon this piece by accident and were so taken aback by its virgin beauty that we decided to acquire it immediately in 2010. Thus was born Khetiyo. The property is surrounded by dense sal forest on 3 sides and the river Mandal on the 4th. It forms the northwestern boundary of the famed corbett national park and is well inside the buffer area newly formed Kalagarh tiger reserve. The wildlife denisity and proximity ensure a steady presence of mammals and birds and for the interested a huge variety of dragon flies as well. What makes khetiyo interesting that it was a village. That means there are remnants of old houses and irrigation channels which have a story of their own. In the days of the raj, the elite in the society, every once in a while, went on shikaar trips. These shikaar trips, apart from being recreational activities, were the epitome of minimalistic style and class. We intend recreate the simple charm of a tent and a wodden chair under the cool shade of a sal tree sipping some hot chai made on fire wood. This is the entire idea behind Khetiyo - to live in a world where time has paused for almost a century. Wildlife tourism in the region has been very focused on the tiger which is the top predator in the local eco-system. There is little focus on emphasizing on the spectacular bio-diversity that exists in the region. Moreover the visits into the park are rarely insightful and fail to equip the tourist with an appreciation for the drama that’s unfolding in front of his eyes. We intend to build this educational content and add quality to the experience.

Guess who came visiting to khetiyo yday. In the summers the river on the south is the only water source left for the elephants and its almost an everyday sight to see them pass by in herds, play around in the river and then go by. Once in a while they decide to pay our kitchen garden a visit but that’s ok. They are the lords of the jungle and none can stand in their path.

Khetiyo has received a facelift during the lockdown. The staff could not sit idle and decided to spend the day colouring the stones white. The Garhwali folk have never lacked a sense of simple sophistication when it comes to aesthetic sense. Their past time has definitely made it look better and as they claim warded away the elephants as well!!!!

Especially in the wild, deep forest, being responsible as a traveller, as a host and as people interacting with a natural ecosystem becomes ever more critical. We thank our guests for being responsible travellers, and ask you to keep spreading the idea.

We share and stress upon this message and idea with all travellers, often with ourselves within the teams, and with our guests.

Finally our home in khetiyo is up and running. Completely built from stones within the property and using mud as far as possible. Cement or concrete has been used only to render structural strength where needed. It's a modest estate home with three bedrooms and a dining cm library. However all said and done khetiyo was and continues to be all about the outdoors and experiencing the Indian jungle in a responsible manner with a super low footprint. No we dont do safaris but instead we encourage folks to walk around or even better just sit in a place and observe. In the jungle there s a lot happening behind the veil of silence.

Red headed vulture spotted at the estate on Sunday on the badadhar trail. For almost 20 minutes this vulture just kept gorging on a kill and cleaning it's wings and toes, never once looking up. This beautiful creature also known as the king vulture is now critically endagered and a step away from being extinct.
Sightings like these make a trip to khetiyo so unique.

The badadhar hike from khetiyo to Cham passes through some splendid vantage points. In fact once can look at the ridges that form the Corbett tiger reserve.
This is a unique experience as u get a perspective of the park that you would not get in a safari.

This is great news.

This is great news.

Citing breach of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Uttarakhand High Court has banned the commercial use of elephants for commercial safaris and has also reduced the number of gypsies to 100 per day.

We're starting work on the Earth Lodge @ Khetiyo soon - 3 rooms and a living room for those who love the wild - to live in, yet be right there in the forest.

The plans are ready, and we need enthusiastic architect volunteers to go spend a week or two there to help oversee the effort.

The foundation is ready - made of local stone (most material is from the site) and the walls will be a mix of adobe and rammed earth.

If you like being in the forest, and are passionate about building with local materials - we'd love to have you over to help us. The stay (there's a cabin in the woods right now), food, pickup from Kotdwar, walks in the forest, up to Garhwali villages etc are all on us!

Do PM. And reshare with interested architects.
