It’s 5:37am. I had gone to bed reluctantly, not having had my fill of the star-filled sky. Now, I’m awake and squinting in the bright sunlight that’s filling my room through the French windows. The sun has risen and I can see from my warm cosy bed that Ama ley is already out with her shovel, cutting channels for the mountain stream to irrigate the patches she’s readied for sowing. Ama-ley (ley being Ladakhi for mother) is the matriarch of the family that owns the farm on which the newly-opened Tara Mountain Sarai, a five-tent glamp in Zanskar’s remote Lungnak Valley, is built on.

That we’re in Ladakh is cued by the region’s handwoven carpets and a thigma tie-and-dye wall hanging. An oxygen cylinder stands in a corner just in case altitude sickness strikes. We are, after all, at an elevation of about 12,500ft (3,825m) above sea level.

The origin lies in its deep rooted history, as it was first established in 1978 by British adventure travel pioneers. As time went by, we have succeeded in keeping the legacy of Sarai intact, while inculcating a sense of comfort to develop it as a resort that indulges you nature and luxury combined. The present grand and luxurious structure of the Sarai group was created by two men together – Lotus Sandup and Rigzin Namgyal, partners in business with complimenting attributes.

Lotus Sandup started his career as a pony man with Tiger tops in the year 1990 at a time when only explorers traversed through these mighty passes. Through his journey with Tiger tops he realised his love to meet different people and show them his home. After a few years of guiding with tiger tops he was given a managerial role and he grew further in his carrier from there. Rigzin Namgyal: From the Nomadic Valley of Chanthang, spent most of his early days traversing through high passes, looking for green pastures for his Pashmina goats, Ponies and Yak. A free soul from childhood, he always defied boundaries and travelled the world. An avid trekker, cyclist and spiritual man who tries every day to do better than the previous day.
