Madurai isn’t just Meenakshi Amman Temple.

There’s a quieter Shiva Paadal Petra temple in Sellur, right by the Vaigai, called Thiruvapudaiyar, also known as Thiru Aappanoor.

And here’s the best part: according to legend, when the Vaigai flooded, a Pandya king named Solandhagan couldn’t cross, until a simple “aappu”, a wooden wedge, is said to have manifested as a Shivalingam.

Even today, on Panguni Uththiram, Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are brought here in procession.

That’s why this place feels quiet but powerful.

So if you’re coming to Madurai, don’t stop at one temple.
