When we first realised that our guests were from God’s own country. Kerala, we were wondering how would our place match up to their expectations, and the landscapes of their home state. After all, there is reason why that byline - ‘God’s own country’ is so perfect for that lovely state - lovely beaches, backwaters, rice paddies, hilly plantations, amazing people, good food.
But this young couple was so open to all the experiences that we were offering, that it was a total delight for us to host them!
Long walks, lazing by the creek, lovely conversations, exploring branded local booze and our house cocktails….
They enjoyed the experience of birding so much that in a sense we are guilty of creating a need in them to buy a pair of good binoculars and immerse themselves into this hobby with a renewed passion.
As we said fond farewell to each other, they promised to drop by soon when they come to Goa to celebrate a significant event in their lives.
We thoroughly enjoyed their company, and we wish them well on their journey of life.

Its always nice to run or work in an organisation where one’s roles and positions get defined by one’s passions, true behaviours and what one brings to the table.
Oliver joined us just as a simple pet. He is today the Chief People Officer and Chief of Guest Relations at Fishtail Creek, and he does this role better than any one of us. In most guest reviews, people may forget to mention the rest of us in the team, but no one ever forgets to recall the time that Oliver gave them, filled with unconditional love, deep levels of connectedness, all enveloped in pure and unadulterated devotion towards our guests.
Here’s Oliver on an inspection of our boat birding trip, where we curate beautiful experiences for our guests. Its fantastic when the Chief People Officer personally visits the operations (pic 1), chilling with his buddy and sibling who lives overseas (pic 2), easily understanding Swedish that one of our guests decided to use to converse with Oliver because he felt that was the best way to connect deeply with him (pic 3), getting mentored on how to run an organisation with heart from a young leader working for an amazing not-for-profit enterprise (pic 4), providing emotional and physical support to an amazing cohort who had come for a transformation workshop (pic 5), being a kiddie pal for a young guest on her birthday (pic 6), and waiting at our river jetty with his ‘mummy’ to welcome the guests back to shore.
By the way, he overheard that his other sibling is coming soon from Mumbai to spend a fortnight with us, and he is already so excited by the cuddles he’s going to be getting! 🥰
Oliver is so integral to what Fishtail Creek stands for - warmth, hospitality, deep connections and memories that last a lifetime!

Often people ask us, isn’t it tedious to keep hosting guests back to back as we run our homestay… don’t we ever get tired?
The truth is, we get energised by the presence of our wonderful guests and it makes it all so worth it!
One such family spent a week with us and just left for home a couple of days back. And we all are missing them big time! Including Oliver! The conversations we had with them, the trips we did with them, the experiences we curated for them were such an absolute delight! There was so much grace and gentleness in the family, that we all felt connected at such a deep level.
We shared common interests with everyone in the family. A common passion for bird photography (the bird pics posted here are our guest’s, taken on a couple of birding trips during their stay), travel, geopolitics, sustainability, organisation culture and the people perspective… this led to conversations that were deep and meaningful. Our daughter has come visiting from overseas- so she engaged with the kids of the family at another level and we ended up creating a beautiful time for all of us in the holiday season.
This is the essence of running homestays…. Coming across wonderful people, sharing an amazing time with them, and leaving behind fond memories to cherish for years to come!

It makes us feel so happy when people decide to come to Fishtail Creek to celebrate the anniversary of a significant day of their lives.
In this case, a couple who decided to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
We took them to a side-stream of the river where trees from both banks met above, creating a natural catherdral-like space, and instead of a choir, we heard the sounds of birds calling and singing, the sounds amplified under the natural canopy. As we drifted through this amazing inlet, i could see the magical, joyous experience that we could provide to our guests on that special day.
The morning culminated with a sumptuous breakfast and I could see that the heart, mind and the belly were all satiated and there was just pure bliss within us all.
Ah….. another beautiful morning at Fishtail Creek Goa. For our guests, and for us too!

No matter how many times we have to take different guest groups to experience Goa in the rains, driving, hiking, guiding, outfitting, serving,….it’s never something that tires us even a little bit. In fact it energises us. What a job, and what an office to have- the beautiful, natural landscapes of Goa that come into their own in the monsoons.
And those moments that stay with us for a long time make it sooo worth it! Whether it’s the bliss we see on their faces when we have them savour those amazing pyaaz aur mirchi ka pakoras with garam chai from our favourite little shop run by a lady with the most dazzling smile, or just getting connected to that deep sense of meditative silence that envelopes us all when we know that we have had a good day, that has nourished us from within. 😎 🏡

Im not even sure why I’m sharing this rather personal post on this Insta handle. But I guess Fishtail Creek is a Homestay and not a Hotel, Villa or a BnB. We (the hosts) live here, and so our guests do come into our lives and vice versa.
A month and a half ago, we celebrated the wedding of our son Siddharth with the love of his life Shreya. We decided to have one of the functions at Fishtail Creek itself. We were apprehensive because ours is not an open plot but a parcel of land that has been lovingly nurtured, keeping all the wild trees and planting so many more plants, shrubs and even trees while making sure the footprint of our home sits between all the greenery, in a way that it almost feels like a cottage in a mini rain forest. Definitely not the ideal venue to accommodate a hundred guests for such an event. But we really wanted no other place for this critical function other than the place we all love and resonate with so deeply. It is said that if one loves and respects nature with integrity, then nature responds and gives back in abundance. And that is exactly what happened that evening. Our guests, like the popular parable of the Parsi settlers that came to India, kept getting accommodated like sugar into milk. The sweetness of our family and friends, blending into the goodness of nature. A wonderful, memorable night that we shall cherish all our lives.

We recently had a mother and her son stay with us. Wonderful souls, who were totally receptive to everything that a Homestay like ours offers to its varied guests. The boy was such a keen learner of new experiences and an amazing craftsman, never taking the short-cut in honing his expertise on new skills. I was amazed to see what he had crafted out of wood - things a master-craftsman would have been proud of!
The shy boy’s mom told me that he was really keen on going on the river to try his hand on fishing.
The only day that worked for this was the day they were leaving. The tide wasn’t right, they had a car waiting to take them to the airport, and they also had to grab a breakfast before they left. I forewarned the boy that while we will give it a shot, it would just be a quick trip to experience and learn the act of fishing.
As luck would have it, the proverbial beginner’s luck, a small barramundi fish took the line on the lighter tackle- perfect for a thrilling experience of landing a fish. The fish gave a fight and the boy utilised his newly learnt skills and landed the fish. There was a child like glee on his face that I will never forget. As they rushed back, quickly packed and rushed to grab a breakfast, the boy was totally surprised and delighted to have the fish served to him, marinated quickly for just 15 minutes. Another Fishtail Creek experience that gives us a lovely warm feeling in our belly. 🥰 🌴

One of the biggest blessings of running our Homestay is that we occasionally come across some supremely talented and inspiring guests…. People who make you believe that there is hope for a gentler way to experience the world.
One such guest visited us recently. An amazing traveller who gets off the usual touristic circuits and goes deep into the hinterland of India, mingling with tribals in places like Bastar or remote villages in Odisha, engaging with rural children, sharing her talent with kids. Teaching and learning. We had the privilege of taking her on our birding trip and an evening birding walk on a nearby plateau. It was through these activities that I found out about her talent of drawing and painting birds…. A gift that she got from her late father, a famous nature illustrator of England. Her time at Fishtail Creek was an absolute pleasure as we hear stories of her travels and experiences……all of us at Fishtail Creek felt supremely inspired by her way of being… gentle, giving, open to seeing and absorbing without prejudice, spreading joy.
May her tribe increase.

Its truly a blessing to live on the banks of an estuarine river, and run this Homestay. I get the opportunity to go on our boat very often to do some good quality birding with our guests. The boat allows a closer look at the birds without alarming them and we seriously practice responsible birding.
One of the birds we see on almost every trip is this little fellow- sadly named the Common Kingfisher. What a drab name for such a beautiful bird! I prefer to introduce it to our guests by its other name(s)- the Eurasian Kingfisher or the River Kingfisher… or even the Small Blue Kingfisher. We often hear it, letting out a high pitched ‘cheee, cheee chee chee’ before we see that brilliant blue flashing past, often flying very low above the surface of the water, and then perching on a low branch or a bamboo stump. The female has an orange reddish lower beak while the male’s is black/ dark olive both sides. The last pic in this stack is an artistic ode to this beautiful bird, created by an amazingly talented young guest who stayed with us recently. The small inlet streams that we enter from the main river are truly magical, and the bird sightings make the trips even more special.

So, the monsoons have finally receded and the outdoor spaces at Fishtail Creek are being respectfully reclaimed from the rain Gods, with their permission. An occasional dinner by the river, an afternoon of slow living-swinging lazily on the hammock, reading a book picked up from the carefully curated mini Library in the guest cottage, or just birding from our river deck, the silence punctuated by the chimes of those danglers that we make here at Fishtail Creek. A slow sip of our Feni cocktail that is our special concoction takes you into another time-space, where all is well.
We enjoyed the rains, and now we are enjoying the season change, and are ready with other experiences for our guests that they will take back as fond memories.

Different people come to Fishtail Creek for different reasons, and it’s always nice when our guests share with us what brought them to this Homestay.
Here is one beautiful reason why our recent guests came to stay at Fishtail Creek. It was a birthday gift by the parents for their daughter. Now how beautiful is that!
And we as hosts felt so happy for this wonderful family as they spent quality time together, with Fishtail Creek playing the role of a gentle host for them.

Once in a while on board Fishtail One, our elegant little birding boat, we do get some real troopers for our birding trips on the Moira river. This one is a true Junior Naturalist; she enjoyed herself thoroughly and gave us a thumbs up on our trip. Some of the birds we saw on her trip (and photographed to share here) were painted stork (2/7), blue faced malkoha (3/7), brahminy kite (4/7), striated heron (5/7), wire-tailed swallow (6/7) and small blue kingfisher (7/7).
It’s such a delight to meet young people who celebrate and enjoy nature. May their tribe increase, for the sake of our planet!
