The Cabo de Rama Fort in Canacona was originally a Hindu structure which was rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1763 after acquiring it from the Maratha ruler of Sonda. A crumbling turret still houses a couple of rusty old Portuguese cannons. The church of Santo Antonio which is inside the Fort, is in excellent condition and is still used by devotees. The Gaur or Indian Bison is the State animal of Goa. They are the tallest of wild cattle species with a head-and-body length of upto 10 feet, a height of upto 7 feet and can even weigh a massive 1,500kgs. Gaur herds are led by an old adult female-the matriarch, but both sexes carry horns which grow from the sides of the head, curving upwards.
The Gaur is also used as the mascot of Team FC Goa in the ISL- Indian Super League.
