Mein seeks special package, highlights Arunachal’s hydropower strength

TMT | NEW DELHI | 20 Sept 2026: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has urged the Centre to grant a special economic package for Arunachal Pradesh, citing the state's difficult terrain, high transportation costs, long rainy season and short working period, which make development projects more expensive.

Speaking at the national conference on “Financing India’s Journey Towards a Viksit Bharat” in New Delhi, Mein said that despite these challenges, Arunachal has maintained fiscal discipline while making major investments in infrastructure, connectivity, power, health and education.

The DCM also highlighted Arunachal’s immense hydropower potential, describing it as a strategic national asset for India’s clean energy future. He said the state possesses nearly 58,000 MW of hydropower potential, accounting for about 40 percent of the country’s total capacity, and aims to harness 40,000 MW by 2047.

Under the “Decade of Hydropower 2025-35” vision, Arunachal plans to add 19,000 MW of new capacity with investments worth around ₹1.9 lakh crore, generating thousands of jobs and boosting economic growth.

Mein emphasized that responsible hydropower development, backed by strong transmission infrastructure and central support, can transform Arunachal’s economy while significantly contributing to India’s energy security and clean energy transition.

DHRF condemns child abuse case, calls for stronger protection of children

TMT | DIYUN | 11 Sept 2026: The Diyun Human Rights Forum [DHRF] has strongly condemned the alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl and assault of a minor boy in Itanagar, calling for swift and strict action against the accused.

Welcoming the intervention of the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights [APSCPCR] and the arrest made by Itanagar Police, DHRF demanded a fair and thorough investigation under the POCSO Act and other relevant laws. It also urged authorities to ensure immediate medical care, counselling, protection and rehabilitation for the affected children.

The forum appealed to the public and media not to share any content that could reveal the identity of the victims.

DHRF also expressed concern over reports that many minor children, particularly from Chakma-inhabited areas, may still be engaged in domestic work and other forms of labour. The forum said it continues to receive reports of exploitation and abuse involving children working away from their homes.

Calling for stronger child-protection measures, DHRF urged the government to improve coordination among child welfare agencies, police and labour authorities. It further announced that it would intensify efforts to identify vulnerable children and facilitate their rescue, protection and rehabilitation.

“Every child deserves safety, dignity, education and justice,” the forum stated.

Arunachal’s Kino Yakap conquers 7,077 - metre Mount Kun

TMT | LEH | 10 Sept 2026: Arunachal Pradesh has another reason to celebrate as Miss Kino Yakap, a member of Team Arunachal, successfully scaled Mount Kun (7,077 metres/23,219 feet) in the majestic Zanskar Range of the Himalayas in Kargil district of Ladakh on September 7, 2026.

The remarkable feat adds yet another shining chapter to her growing mountaineering career. After successfully reaching the summit, Yakap safely returned to Leh and is expected to arrive back in Arunachal Pradesh in the coming days.

Mount Kun, one of the most challenging peaks in the Indian Himalayas, tests climbers with its harsh weather, difficult terrain and extreme altitude. Yakap’s successful ascent stands as a powerful symbol of courage, determination and unwavering spirit.

This is not her first achievement in the mountains. She had earlier conquered Mount Kang Yatse-II (6,250 metres) in Ladakh in 2025 and Mount Yunam (6,111 metres) in Himachal Pradesh in 2026. She has also successfully completed the Advanced Mountaineering Course, further strengthening her credentials as one of Arunachal’s promising young climbers.

Congratulating her on the achievement, Team Arunachal said Yakap’s dedication, discipline and perseverance have become a source of inspiration for aspiring mountaineers and adventure enthusiasts across the state.

Her successful summit of Mount Kun is not only a personal triumph but also a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh, showcasing the strength, resilience and limitless potential of the state’s youth on the national stage.

AAPSU slams Kuki rights body for ‘interference’ in Arunachal affairs

TMT | ITANAGAR | 9 September 2026: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Tuesday strongly criticized the Manipur-based Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) for reportedly approaching the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the United Nations over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bordumsa.

Calling the move “baseless, politically motivated and an unwarranted interference,” AAPSU president Meje Taku said the organisation had no role in matters concerning the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh.

“This is purely an issue of Arunachal Pradesh and its indigenous communities. Outside organisations have no right to interfere in our internal affairs,” Taku stated.

AAPSU clarified that the SIR is a statutory exercise being conducted by the Election Commission of India and said it has every democratic right to raise concerns regarding the alleged inclusion of illegal and doubtful names in electoral rolls.

The union asserted that the Chakma-Hajong issue is not merely a question of minority rights but is closely linked to the protection of indigenous identity, land, culture and future generations. It expressed concern over the growing demographic pressures faced by local communities in parts of Changlang district.

Rejecting allegations of violence, AAPSU maintained that its movement has remained peaceful and democratic, aimed solely at protecting the rights and interests of indigenous people.

The apex students’ body urged the Election Commission and the Arunachal Pradesh government to ensure a transparent completion of the SIR exercise without yielding to any external pressure. It also called upon the people of the state to remain united in safeguarding the land, identity and rights of Arunachal Pradesh’s indigenous communities.

UAIPF demands removal of CM, Home Minister; raises border and governance voncerns

TMT | ITANAGAR | 30 August 2026: The United Arunachal Indigenous People’s Forum [UAIPF] has urged Governor KT Parnaik to recommend the removal of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Home Minister Mama Natung, alleging failure to address key issues affecting the state.

Submitting a memorandum to the Governor, UAIPF president Sama Bagang said concerns over the reported intrusion of China's People's Liberation Army [PLA] into Taksing circle of Upper Subansiri district had been repeatedly raised by local residents, AAPSU and other organisations. He alleged that the government failed to properly verify the reports, creating public anxiety over a matter linked to national security.

The Forum also demanded the Chief Minister’s resignation over the alleged ₹1,200-crore contract controversy, arguing that an impartial investigation would require him to step aside.
UAIPF further alleged irregularities, lack of transparency and favouritism in tourism projects implemented under the Centre’s Swadesh Darshan scheme, under which over ₹97 crore was sanctioned for Arunachal Pradesh.

In addition, the forum expressed concern over the APFRA issue and the unresolved Assam - Arunachal boundary dispute, urging the Governor to take appropriate action on all matters highlighted in its memorandum.
