5,500 years of legend. Generations of tradition.
Every year, on the first day of the Tarnetar Festival, the Muli Royal Family continues the ceremonial tradition of performing the pooja and hoisting the 52-foot dhwaja at the sacred Trinetreshwar Mahadev Temple which marks the opening of the Tarnetar Fair.
Legend holds that the temple dates back 5,500 years, to an era when the Rishimunis and Sages gathered at the Fair. This era is much older than even the Mahabharata era. This temple is the very site where Arjuna, guided only by the reflection of a fish in the water, pierced its eye and won Draupadi at her swayamvar during the Mahabharata.
On the same day, the Muli Royal Family also has the honour to be the first to perform the puja and hoist the flag at the historic Juna Suraj Deval and Vasuki dada temples in Than.
For the Muli Royal Family, the performing of the puja and hoisting of the dhwaja is more than a ceremony. It is a centuries-old responsibility — a tradition of faith, heritage and service that has been passed down through generations.
Tarnetar is not merely a fair. It is a living expression of Saurashtra’s heritage — where mythology, devotion, folk tradition and history come together.
