Abode Bombay

Abode Bombay Discover Bombay's first luxury boutique hotel: a tranquil haven of beautiful design, style and refin

In the heart of Mumbai – in Colaba, historical epicentre of the city, sits Abode; a boutique hotel which is a complete expression of the city, celebrating its magic with chic, modern interpretations of historical features. Paying subtle homage to Bombay’s heritage and bohemian past. The ultimate anti-chain hotel, Abode is fabulously unconventional in its individuality and style, yet suitably refin

ed when it comes to meeting guests’ expectations. Abode is the sequel to a story that begun in 1910 when Bombay was a bustling trading port, brimming with traders from across the new world. Our hotel began life as the private residence of David Sassoon, one of Bombay’s most industrious entrepreneurs, during Bombay’s commercial heyday. A local family specialising in antiques, acquired the property in 1982 and ran it as a small guesthouse for many years until the true potential of the property was realised in 2013. The hotel is located in a lovely building from 1910 Bombay, and the soul of the place is still alive in Abode today. The hotel’s wooden and iron façade has been fully restored and the lobby still features the buildings original 19th Century chandelier. The floors are laid with hand-made cement tiles by a local tile maker, operating in Mumbai for over 100 years. Abode has combined the feel of luxury, the charm of a boutique hotel and a unique Bombay inspiration to source and create the furniture of the hotel.

Mango season is serious business around here.

And the Alphonso earns its title of ‘The King of Mangoes’ very quickly once you’ve had a good one — sweet, messy, fragrant, and worth planning your summer around.

So if there’s one thing you do while staying with us, make sure you try one in peak season.

Or better yet, ask our Front Desk where to find the best Aam Ras nearby. It’s puréed mango, served cold, and an absolute staple in homes and restaurants across Maharashtra at this time of year.

Summer, the Bombay way…

A very Abode thing: masala chai, Parle-G biscuits, and conversations that go on for way longer than expected.

The kettle’s usually on around here — for guests coming back from a South Bombay wander, friends dropping by, or anyone sitting downstairs saying, “Just one cup,” and staying for three.

Simple comforts. Strong tea. Good company. And Parle-Gs disappearing faster than they should. ☕️
We love it!

Two small paper licences. A whole city in motion.

Bombay, 1956.

The first is a Cycle Licence, issued by the Bombay Municipal Corporation under the Bombay Police Act, 1951.
At the time, owning a bicycle meant paying a small annual fee (here, Rs. 2) and carrying proof on you. It was a simple system to regulate and record movement in a city where cycles were everywhere — practical, affordable, and essential to daily life.

The second is a Walking Licence — equal parts official and tongue-in-cheek.
It notes a “brisk (office rush)” pace, a fixed daily route, even a permitted distance. Whether fully enforced or not, it reflects the city’s ability to blend order with humour, turning something as ordinary as walking into documentation.

Cycle licences stayed in place until roughly the late 1970s–early 1980s, before being phased out as the city shifted gears.
Walking licences, unsurprisingly, didn’t last in any formal sense — but they remain a lovely reminder of Bombay’s wit.

A time when even the everyday came with a paper trail…

Crawford Market.

Before it became the beautiful chaos we know today, this was one of the city’s most ambitious Victorian buildings—completed in 1869 and designed by William Emerson (who also went on to design the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta). The friezes on the building were done by Rudyard Kipling’s father, and if you look closely, you’ll still spot some of that original detail.

It was one of the first places in the city to have electric lighting, and for years, this is where Bombay came to shop—fresh produce and imported goods, everything under one roof.

If you’re up for it, we can organise a guide to take you through it the way locals do—through the quieter lanes, old family-run shops, and tiny food spots that have been around for generations.

It’s a lot to take in on your own. Much more fun with someone who knows where to look…

Did you know Bombay once had a literal starting point?

This plaque marks “Zero Point” — the spot from which distances across the city were measured in the 1800s. As Mumbai grew, milestones across its roads traced their way back here, quietly mapping how the city expanded over time.

You’ll find it beside St. Thomas’ Cathedral, set within the historic green at Horniman Circle. It’s walking distance from Galeries Lafayette, and just a few minutes by car from Abode Bombay—close enough to fit easily into your day.

A small detail, but one that quietly holds the scale of an entire city.

Staying with us? We’ll point you in the right direction…

Henry Road, just steps away from Abode Bombay - on the quieter side of Colaba.

Face the sea, and it’s calm, green, and easy.
Turn around, and you’re right in the middle of Colaba Causeway.

That’s how most lanes here work—two different moods, a few steps apart.
Old buildings, a lot of history, and some very iconic neighbours.

We wouldn’t have it any other way…
