Spending summers in the forest has slowly become one of our favourite things.

The old grasses thin out,
paths begin to appear where there were none,
and the forest opens up just enough to let you wander a little further.

There’s always some movement;
birds calling, a hare crossing your path,
water finding its way between rocks.

As long as there’s shade and a bit of sun,
there’s always something to notice.

Growing up, Vishu has always been a time of coming together. With schools closed for the summer, we’d eagerly wait for it so we could visit our family in North Malabar.

Back then, my mother’s ancestral home stood in the midst of a paddy field. By April, the harvest would be over, leaving behind open land that became our playground. We chased dragonflies, strung jasmine flowers into maala, and climbed mango trees to pluck raw mangoes - cut into pieces, mixed with coconut oil and spices, and eaten with sticky fingers.

On Vishu morning, dressed in newly stitched skirts or mundus, we waited patiently for Vishu kaineetam - a treasure for the little kids we were. After the sadya, led by the eldest among us, we would run to the nearby shop to exchange our little fortunes for colourful candies and crackers.

Another Vishu has come, and we are far from that home. But traditions have a way of leading us back to these memories. This year too, mommy woke up early to arrange the Vishu kani. Our family has only grown over the years, now including 30+ staff who form the backbone of The Mudhouse. For many of them, this was their first Vishu. Yet, the joy on their faces, dressed in new sarees and mundus, receiving Vishu kaineetam, felt no different from the joy of my own childhood.

And perhaps that’s what celebrations are meant to do - to take us back to our most cherished memories, and allow us, if only for a moment, to be children again.
