The safaris bring most people to Kabini. What they remember is everything else.

Coffee on the deck while the forest wakes. A spider pointed out on a morning walk, a visit to the farm that feeds our kitchen, a bicycle on a village road. A long afternoon by the pool. Our new boat out at golden hour, a picnic by the backwaters, and a fire waiting when you get back.

October is when it all opens up again. The rains have settled, the trails are reopening, and the days are made for being outside.

As Wildlife Week draws to a close, a good reason to look closely at the forest we share our home with.

These are a few moments from recent safaris in Nagarahole as the rains settle - the forest green and full, herds at the water’s edge, a tiger resting in the shade, and birds wherever you look.

Every one of them happened on the forest’s terms: from a respectful distance, with voices kept low. None of it is ours. We’re simply lucky to live beside it, and to share it with the people who come to see it with us.

Thirty-odd species, and you never have to go far to meet them.

Some are here on the property - the Malabar Pied Hornbills following the fruiting trees, a Vernal Hanging Parrot somewhere above you, a male Paradise Flycatcher crossing a path with that long white tail behind him.

The rest are down by the backwaters, where the Kabini opens out. Grey Herons standing very still in the shallows, a Pied Kingfisher holding its hover, an Osprey over the far bank if the morning is kind.

Our naturalist knows most of them by call, long before anyone sees a thing.

There’s no plan to follow. Coffee and a chair before breakfast, a Southern Coucal picking its way through the undergrowth nearby, or an hour by the water in the evening - and the forest introduces itself.

The nicest hour of the day at KAAV asks almost nothing of you. Just a pair of shoes.

As the light starts to go, we walk. Through the property, down towards the water, past trees that have been here far longer than the lodge has. The forest is settling in for the night. Birds come in to roost, the light turns gold and then goes soft, and whoever is with you will happily stop to explain a call you’ve never heard before.

September has been a good month for it. The rain has left everything green, the evenings have been cool, and the walks have been long.

The green season runs through October, and this hour only gets better as the light changes. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to come to Kabini, this is it.

Some days in Kabini, the forest makes you wait right up to the end.

This week, we’d almost given up. The drive had been long and quiet, and we were already on our way out of the park. Then the jungle changed. Alarm calls started up, everyone in the jeep fell silent, and something stepped onto the track ahead of us.

It was the TT Female herself, the tigress of the Tiger Tank area. She walked the road as if she owned it, which she more or less does, and then disappeared back into the green.

That’s why we never pack our cameras away before we’re out of the gate.

The Kariya Suite

Named for the black leopard, with a private pool of its own - where the monsoon is best watched from the water, or from your own veranda.

Our most private corner of KAAV. A room that opens to its own sun deck and pool, the forest close on every side, and little reason to go anywhere once you’ve arrived.

In the rains it comes into its own - green all around, the water warm, the day entirely yours to waste.

Of this land, rolled by hand.

Ragi has grown in these parts for generations - a millet that asks little of the land and gives back plenty. Iron, calcium, fibre, all in one humble grain.

In our kitchen it becomes mudde: steamed, worked by hand, rolled warm. No shortcuts, no fuss - just the way it’s always been made here.

You eat it with a curry, without cutlery, the old way. Simple, ancient, and quietly good for you.
