The caves are excavated inside a picturesque and hilly ravine surrounded by forests. The forest area is home to select wildlife such as tiger, deer, wild boar, black bear, peacock, rabbit, mongoose, monkeys, etc. The particular stretches of the ghats (slopes of Deccan plateau) in which the caves are carved were named Indhya Mountains by the makers of Ajanta. Indhya is a part of the Sahayadri range

of Western Ghats. Throughout the Deccan plateau the slopes of the ghats are home to a number of ancient monastic sites of India. A majority of rock-cut architecture is found on these slopes. The Deccan plateau was formed through volcanic eruptions in remote past. It was possible earlier for the visitors vehicle to go right up to the caves. However, all such vehicle must now stop at the tea-point developed by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). From tea-point you will have to board the governments (diesel run) buses to reach to the cave site. Park is situated 3 km from T-Point and 1km from Fardapur. Park is affiliated to Youth Hostel Association of India, New Delhi, and is recognized as the sole authorised Youth Hostel for Ajanta and Ellora cave sites.
