SERVICES MARITIMES DES MESSAGERIES IMPÉRIALES PAQUEBOTS - POSTE FRANÇAIS
We all know that the 18th-century Port Office on Beach Road in Puducherry was converted into LE CAFÉ in 2008. In this post, however, we will explore another historically significant site.
Here are some interesting facts about a famous company that once operated at the location where Hotel PROMENADE in Puducherry stands today. Although the company no longer exists, it played an important role during its time.
This site held significant importance during the French India period. In the 18th century, it housed a commercial establishment known as ‘SERVICES MARITIMES DES MESSAGERIES IMPÉRIALES PAQUEBOTS’-POSTE FRANÇAIS.
This site once functioned as a central warehouse for goods and parcels arriving by ship, as well as a parcel post office. Historical accounts suggest that it operated continuously, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, reflecting its importance in the movement and distribution of cargo during that period.
The main entrance to this building was located on the east side of Cours Chabrol (Goubert Avenue), beside the old lighthouse. As soon as ships reached the port, all supplies were brought to this location by land and via the railway track built within the port, with the help of several hand-held rowboats.
The term ‘Messageries des Maritimes’ was introduced at the end of the Second Empire in 1861. Consequently, this photograph may predate that year, although establishing the exact year with certainty remains challenging.
In 1967, this place of historical importance served as the location of the government office All India Radio (AIR) in independent India. With its unique broadcasts in Tamil, Hindi, and Sanskrit, AIR Puducherry has a listenership base of more than 90 lakh, covering the Union Territory of Puducherry. Later, the office was shifted to Indira Nagar, Gorimedu, Puducherry.
In 2006, the reconstruction of Hotel Promenade began at this site, and the hotel was inaugurated in 2010. The Promenade Hotel was designed by the American architect and potter Ray Meeker. The exteriors of The Promenade were kept in sync with the French colonial buildings that line the entire stretch of Pondicherry’s Promenade Beach. The hotel’s lounge and pool, adorned with authentic Balinese motifs, were designed by Australian landscape specialist Made Wijaya. It is a Hidesign hotel and is managing by the Sarovar Group of Hotels.
