3rd December is celebrated as the Feast of St. Francis Xavier. The annual feast marks the culmination of the novena in which thousands of faithful visit Old Goa to pay homage to the Saint.
A large number of devotees embark on walking pilgrimages to Old Goa for the novena and feast. The saint’s popularity transcends borders and religions, with a large group from Karnataka and Maharashtra making the traditional pilgrimage on foot.
Masses are held in multiple Indian and European languages....Konkani, English, Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam,Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian.
For the first time this year was also a special mass for the hearing impaired, where a sign language interpreter helped them partake in the mass.
The Novena and feast are held at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which also houses the relics of the Saint.
There are events organised at the ‘Se Cathedral’ as well.
Once known as the ‘Rome of the East’, Old Goa is fascinating to explore with many reminders of the region’s former grandeur and the importance it held in the colonial era. There are a number of colonial buildings, convents, and churches. The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se cathedral are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
