Boitabandan and Baliyatra remind maritime supremacy of ancient Odisha

Recalling the glorious maritime tradition of ancient Odisha, Boitabandan and Baliyatra, is celebration to mark the age old tradition of sea voyage by the Sadhabas Those were sailed for trade to eastern Islands as Ceylon, Java, Sumatra and Bali.

People in the state celebrate Kartika Purnima the last day of holy month kartika on Hindu ritual amid usual pomp and gaiety men women and children in colourful clothes. Through water fronts to set sail tiny boats and made either of banana peels, Sola pith or paper with lighted lamps inside to remember the states maritime history.

Pride and glory in actual achievements linger long in the form of traditions after everything has faded into the pages of history. The Maritime supremacy of Kalinga traders thousands years ago in one such forgotten past, but the annual ritual of sending out merchants to sea on Kartika Purnima day forms the part of the observance of Baliyatra and in some places Boita Bandan

History says, the ancient oriya traders (sadhaba) were used to set sail on Kartika Purnima in their Boats ( Boats) for distant islands like Bali, Java, and Sumatra,. Oriya women (Sadhabani) dressed colorfully and perform Boitabandan beside sea shore then the ceremonial send- off to the sailing ships begin on the holy day of Kartika Purnima.

Historians are of opinion that the ancient sea voyages forms Odisha coast were mostly commercial activities and vigorous interaction between the people of Kalinga and south east Asia Particularly the Indonesia island of Bali. Harishpur, Tamralipi, Palur, Chelitola were the great thriving ports of Kalinga and maritime trade relations were maintained with Indonesia and other south east Asian counties during that period.

Though the ancient ports in the Odisha coast, have become inactive because of gradual silting up the river mouths, unhealthy hot climate and infighting between British and Portuguese that resulting maritime trade in almost extinct.

But the memory still preserves the past tradition as a frozen frame through annual celebration of Boita Bandan and Baliyatra.

In cuttack, the centuries old Baliyatra begins with Pomp and ceremony on the day of Kartika Purnima every year and continue for seven days. In Paradip a function on Baliyatra and Boitabanda being organized by district council of culture and Paradip port trust and got off week long celebration at Paradip on Tuesday. Similar function were reported at Tirtol and Balikuda in Jagatsinghpur district where the toy vessels and boats were sailed in gentle wave of rivers and sea amid the singing of Boita Bandan songs traditionally the festival is considered a tribute to glorious past and remembrance of rich maritime heritage of Orissa.
