The Blue City - It’s long been the case that Instagram and other outlets with viral capacity can somewhat distort our expectations. I know that this was true for me in the case of Jodhpur, when I was struggling to find the baby blue-lined streets I had seen and heard so much about. The truth is Jodhpur definitely has an overall theme of “blue,” but the majority of the metropolitan areas of Jodhpur are not painted blue but instead carry the same style of washed-white concrete render architecture as many other Rajasthani cities.
However, don’t get your hopes down. The city of Jodhpur does deserve its eloquent nickname of the Blue City; you just have to know where to look!

The Making of Umaid Bhawan Palace
On 16 October 1925, a man walked into the busy offices of the architectural firm Lanchester & Lodge in London. "The Maharaja of Jodhpur," said the man, "was impressed with the work of the firm and particularly its senior partner, Henry Vaughan Lanchester." Lanchester, a wellknown Edwardian architect, had once been in the running to design the Viceroy's palace in New Delhi. "Would he,” the messenger went on, "be interested in designing a palace for His Highness in Jodhpur?"
The foundation stone of Lanchester's Umaid Bhawan, was laid on 18 November 1929 by the Maharaja himself on the rocky Chittar Hill south east of the city. (The palace was originally called Chittar Palace.) Three thousand men and women worked on Chittar Hill for fifteen years. They used pink-tinged, cream-coloured stone from quarries ten miles away, and marble from Makrana. A special train brought the massive blocks of stone to the hill after a mini-city of skilled workers, descendants of stone dressers and sculptors who had worked for the Mughals in Fatehpur Sikri and Agra, had chiselled them into shape, for each piece had its assigned place in the drawings. Some blocks proved too heavy for the cranes to position with precision so they were placed first on even larger blocks of ice and positioned by hand as the ice melted. Interestingly, the blocks are locked together rather than joined with mortar.
