Responsible Rural Tourism—Agricultural / Farm /Rural Eco Tourism in Uttarakhand India In the Northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, lies the small village of Kanda. It is extremely remote but equally as scenic. A network of cobblestone footpaths wind their way up the vivid green hills, connecting the houses and terraced fields to the central village market.
Village Eco tourists from all over the world come to stay with Mr. Verma and his family to donate their time and money in initiating community based projects. Construction, fundraising, and office work are only a few of the activities done by the volunteers. And while the people of Kanda benefit from the support, the visitors lives are just as enriched, having experienced a culture and lifestyle completely foreign to their own.

The Verma’s welcome visitors with open arms, treating each as is they were a part of the family. Here, in a traditional Indian household, eco tourists learn about the customs and daily life of the inhabitants of this fascinating country. They eat delicious but spices, Indian food organically grown in the Verma’s garden. They witness ancient Hindu ceremonies, learn Hindi, go trekking in the surrounding countryside, and partake in the organic farming practices.
ROSE offer a wide variety of activities for anyone interested in learning about organic farming methods. During harvest, visitors are shown how to cut the various crops using only a knife. These crops include rice, wheat, millet, Soya beans and chickpeas to name a few. Wheat and rice grains are pounded with a mortar and pestle to make flour for the chapattis eaten at most meals. The agricultural work changes from season to season, but there is always work to be done. In the organic garden onions, chilies, garlic, mustard, greens, beans, radish, peas, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes, peppers, aborigines, tomatoes, pumpkin, cucumbers, Taro, and okra are all vegetables planted. These vegetables are staples in the Indian diet and are spiced with ginger, turmeric, cardamom, and coriander to produce the unique, wonderful flavors’ of the cuisine. Having an understanding of what goes into the meals gives the visitor a greater appreciation for the food.
ROSE provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to those interested in international volunteer work, experiencing another culture, or to those who just want to learn about traditional Indian agriculture. Whatever the eco tourist is looking for, ROSE has a variety of activities to offer everyone. Coming to Kanda is a decision you won’t regret.
