Get • Back in 2017, I received an email from none other than Marryam Reshii herself:

“I had the most amazing chance to spend a night at a tranquil palace in a quiet corner of Gujarat. The palace is by a lake, there are hills all around. The gardens could have been designed by Capability Brown himself, the food is robust Gujarati Rajput fare and in the space of 24 hours, I have become best friends with Paranjay Parmar and Mandakini Kumari.”

She implored me to visit. I wanted to. I tried. And then, you know, being thrown out of India, covid, a smashed pelvis, let’s say life got in the way of me and this rather special, hidden Gujarati palace.

Marryam was ahead of the game. It wasn’t even officially open when she was there. Now Shri Joraver Villas, Santrampur is not only open but has joined the RARE Collection.

Five rooms, a 20-acre private lake, Gujarati, Rajput food with traces of Parsi and tribal influence, and Paranjay and Mandakini to host, who’ve been connected to this corner of Gujarat for generations.

This is a place for glimpses: of a royal past, a regional culture, and a landscape that asks nothing of you except to sit and be and breathe.
It’s funny how some places keep cropping up, now I believe it’s meant to be.
Definitely on my next trip bucket list.
