The paper music perforator played a key role in the history of automatic music. Introduced in the late 19th century, these machines were used to punch precise holes into long paper rolls, with each hole representing a musical note. When the perforated roll passed through a player piano, harmonium, or organ, air flowed through the holes to trigger the corresponding notes automatically. Before digital recording, music rolls allowed people to enjoy performances at home and helped preserve compositions by renowned musicians. Although electronic instruments eventually replaced them, paper music perforators remain an important milestone in the evolution of mechanical music and continue to be admired by collectors and restoration experts.
