1) Weather conditions in the hills can change overnight .
2) No amount of driving on the plains or theory knowledge can prepare you for the slippery conditions on icy roads .
3) Having a tow rope does not mean that someone will tow you .
4) The army has its own work to do and schedules to keep . Your car being stranded in the snow and ice may not qualify as being critical enough for the army guys to stop and help .
5) Reducing the front wheel pressure (Front wheel drive ) from 30 psi to about 20 psi will provide more traction on the ice and may help in getting you out of a sticky situation .
6) Try and follow immediately behind a convoy of trucks which have chains fitted on their tyres . They will partly break up the ice and your tyres will have a better grip .
7) Carry a spade . Mud dug up from beside the road and scattered under the tyres will help in getting additional traction if the car gets stuck .
8 ) Always make sure that there is adequate water and ready to eat items in the car when you are planning to cross one of the high passes !
