MYTH, MYTHOLOGY & HISTORY
Understanding India Beyond the Surface
When we travel through India, we do not simply visit monuments.
We enter a world of stories, beliefs, traditions and history.
But there is an important difference between Myth, Mythology and History.
MYTH is a traditional story or belief. It may contain symbolism, imagination and a deeper moral or cultural message. Calling something a “myth” does not necessarily mean calling it false.
MYTHOLOGY is the larger collection of myths, legends and sacred narratives belonging to a culture or civilisation. It helps us understand how generations have imagined, explained and preserved their world.
HISTORY, however, is the study of the past through available evidence — inscriptions, archaeology, documents, coins, records and other sources that can be examined and compared.
And what about the Ramayana & Mahabharata?
The Ramayana is much more than a story. It is a timeless Indian epic carrying ideas of dharma, duty, sacrifice, loyalty and ideal living.
The Mahabharata goes far beyond the story of a great war. It explores power, family, politics, morality, duty and the complexity of human nature.
Their cultural and spiritual influence is undeniable. Their historical dimensions, however, must be examined through evidence and scholarly inquiry.
The simple rule is:
Myth = Story & Belief
Mythology = A Cultural World of Stories
History = The Study of the Past Through Evidence
The real wisdom is not in fighting over labels.
Respect faith.
Respect evidence.
Respect culture.
And learn to understand the difference.
That is also how I believe India should be experienced by a traveller — not merely by seeing places, but by understanding the stories behind them.
