The reason why majority women have a painful menstrual cycle these days is because we have begun to consider 'periods' as a curse rather than a blessing!
For a stress-free cycle, Ayurveda recommends the following:
1) Regular medicated oil enemas beginning 5-6 days prior to the cycle which should be continued for 5-6 months or until symptoms subside.
2) Practicing yogasanas that act upon the uterus and the whole abdominal area. Some important ones are, Supta Virasana, Baddha Konasana, Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Paschimottanasana and Surya Namaskar.
3) By keeping your body ama-free. (Ama is the accumulation of undigested food due to inefficient elimination) For ensuring this, keep away from junk, leftover, fast-food loaded with preservatives. Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables and drink lot of healthy drinks like milk, lassi, coconut water.
4) Eat light, non-spicy foods during the period.
5) Give yourself a warm oil massage focusing more on the abdominal area.
6) Ensure proper elimination on a regular basis by drinking lot of water, eating Sattvik food and avoiding day sleep.
