Late summer in the mountains🩷

The days are still beautifully warm 26–28 degrees this week – but the mornings have that fresh mountain coolness that makes the start of the day feel completely different.

A short walk from Alagna is our neighbouring village, Riva Valdobbia. Small, picturesque and beautifully framed by the mountains – one of those places we never get tired of walking through.

Warm days, cool mornings and clear mountain air.

September in Valsesia is looking rather lovely. 🩷

Simple food, served the Italian way. 🩷

Italian cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. Often, it’s quite the opposite – good ingredients, simple flavours and time around the table.

At Hotel Monterosa, dinner follows the Italian tradition of several courses.

Antipasto – a small beginning.
Primo – often homemade pasta, risotto or soup.
Secondo – meat or fish, simply prepared and served with vegetables.
And finally, dolce – something sweet to finish.

Simple dishes, several courses – and plenty of time to enjoy them. 🩷

This one is for our guests 🩷

Some stay with us for several weeks.
Some for just a few days.
Some book another stay before they’ve even left.
And some write to us three days after getting home asking if they can come back this winter.

That makes us incredibly happy.

Because somewhere along the way, between breakfasts, dinners, days in the mountains and conversations in the bar, you become part of life here at Hotel Monterosa.

And when it’s time to say goodbye, we genuinely miss you.

To everyone who has stayed with us this summer – and to those already planning to come back – thank you.

You are what makes this hotel feel alive. 🩷

Hotel Monterosa was the first hotel in Alagna, and its walls carry more than a century of stories.

In our reception, there is still an old inscription on the wall – the one you see in this photo – telling the story of some very special guests who stayed here.

In July 1892, Margherita of Savoy, Queen of Italy stayed at Hotel Monterosa for three nights. The inscription also records earlier visits by members of the Italian royal family, dating back to 1856.

Queen Margherita had a special connection to the Monte Rosa mountains. A few years later in 1893 she climbed to the summit of Punta Gnifetti at 4,554 metres. The mountain hut there was later named Capanna Regina Margherita in her honour – today the highest building in Europe.

A little piece of Italian and Alagna history, still here on our wall 🩷

Some things quietly change the feeling of a place. 🩷

We’ve just hung a new summer wall and a new winter wall in the corridor leading to our rooms featuring wonderful photographs by the talented local photographer Renzo Andorno.

They bring a little more of Alagna indoors, letting the seasons stay with you a little longer.

Thank you Renzo, for capturing this place so beautifully. We hope our guests will enjoy seeing Alagna through your eyes.

Did you know? 🩷

One of the things that makes Alagna so special is its Walser heritage.

More than 700 years ago the Walser people crossed the Alps and settled in these valleys bringing with them their traditions, language and a unique style of architecture.

Many of the beautiful wooden houses you see around Alagna today have been carefully preserved through generations. Built to withstand life in the mountains they tell the story of a community that has lived in harmony with nature for centuries.

Every time we wander through these quiet streets we’re reminded that some places don’t need to change to remain extraordinary. 🩷🌸

From rifugio to rifugio 🩷

If you’ve never hiked in the Italian Alps before, you might not know what a rifugio is.

Originally built as simple mountain shelters for climbers and shepherds, many rifugi have welcomed hikers for generations. Today they’re places where you can stop for a homemade meal, a coffee, or even spend the night before continuing your journey through the mountains.

One of our favourite hikes takes you from Rifugio Pastore to Rifugio Crespi Calderini. The trail winds through forests, alpine meadows and streams, with beautiful views all the way.

One of the nicest things about hiking from rifugio to rifugio is that the day naturally slows down. You stop for a coffee, a homemade lunch or simply a moment to enjoy the view before continuing to the next mountain hut.

It’s a wonderful way to discover the mountains around Alagna—one trail, one rifugio and one stop at a time. 🩷

Behind the Scenes

Every evening, one of the dishes on our dinner menu is pasta.

Tonight, our chef is preparing a simple classic with local butter and fresh sage. No unnecessary extras – just good ingredients, carefully cooked and full of flavour.

This is the kind of food we love to serve: simple, honest Italian cooking made with care. We hope our guests enjoy it as much as we enjoy preparing it. 🩷

One of the things we’ve been working on lately is updating our website with new photos – and today we’re happy to share a few of them.

This is our newly renovated apartment for up to five guests. With two bedrooms, a cozy living room and a private terrace, it’s a lovely choice for families or friends travelling together.

We hope these new photos make it a little easier to imagine your stay with us in Alagna. We can’t wait to welcome you. 🩷
