A Bressanone, una parte della storia della città si legge direttamente sulle facciate.

Erker, tetti decorati, inferriate in ferro battuto, insegne e portoni raccontano epoche e funzioni diverse. Sono elementi nati per ragioni pratiche o come segno di prestigio, che nel tempo sono diventati parte dell’identità del centro storico.

Vale la pena lasciare per qualche minuto le vie principali e guardare più da vicino. Molti dei dettagli più interessanti della città si trovano sopra una finestra, accanto a un portone o sospesi sulla facciata di un edificio.

In Brixen, part of the city’s history can be read directly on its façades.

Bay windows, decorated roofs, wrought-iron grilles, signs and old doorways reflect different periods and purposes. Originally created for practical reasons or as symbols of prestige, over time they became part of the identity of the historic centre.

It is worth leaving the main streets for a few minutes and taking a closer look. Some of the city’s most interesting details can be found above a window, beside a doorway or hanging from the façade of a building.

Prima di diventare parte dell’immaginario alpino, queste piccole costruzioni avevano una funzione molto concreta.

Nei pascoli di montagna, fienili e ricoveri servivano a conservare il fieno, custodire gli attrezzi e sostenere il lavoro durante i mesi trascorsi in quota. Il legno era il materiale più disponibile e permetteva di costruire strutture semplici, adattate al clima e alle risorse del territorio.

Molte sono ancora presenti nei prati e raccontano un paesaggio che per secoli è stato prima di tutto un luogo di lavoro.

Before becoming part of the Alpine imagery we know today, these small buildings had a very practical purpose.

Across mountain pastures, barns and shelters were used to store hay, keep tools and support everyday work during the months spent at higher altitudes. Wood was the most readily available material, allowing simple structures to be built around the climate and resources of the area.

Many still remain across the meadows, reminders of a landscape that for centuries was, first and foremost, a place of work.

Al tramonto, le montagne sembrano disporsi una dietro l’altra.

Le cime più vicine diventano scure e definite, mentre quelle in lontananza perdono progressivamente contrasto, fino quasi a confondersi con il cielo. È la prospettiva atmosferica: l’aria tra noi e il paesaggio diffonde la luce e rende i profili più lontani chiari e sfumati.

Nelle ultime ore del giorno questo effetto diventa particolarmente evidente, trasformando le Dolomiti in una successione di forme, luce e distanza.

At sunset, the mountains seem to arrange themselves one behind the other.

The closest peaks become darker and more defined, while those in the distance gradually lose contrast, almost blending into the sky. This is atmospheric perspective: the air between us and the landscape scatters light, making distant profiles appear lighter and softer.

During the last hours of the day, this effect becomes particularly visible, turning the Dolomites into a succession of shapes, light and distance.

A Brunico basta alzare lo sguardo per trovare tracce della città medievale.

La Via Centrale, oggi cuore pedonale del centro storico, nacque intorno al 1250, nello stesso periodo in cui venne costruito il Castello di Brunico. Molti degli edifici che la affiancano conservano ancora strutture risalenti al XV secolo, tra facciate, frontoni merlati, portali e dettagli decorativi.

Nel XIV secolo il centro venne racchiuso da una cinta difensiva alta circa otto metri. Delle antiche entrate sono ancora conservate quattro porte: Porta delle Orsoline, Porta di San Floriano, Porta della Rienza e Porta Ragen.

Gran parte della storia di Brunico è ancora lì, mescolata alla vita quotidiana delle sue strade.

In Bruneck, you only need to look up to find traces of the medieval town.

Today the pedestrian heart of the historic centre, Stadtgasse dates back to around 1250, the same period in which Bruneck Castle was built. Many of the buildings lining the street still preserve structures dating back to the 15th century, from their façades and crenellated gables to old gateways and decorative details.

In the 14th century, the centre was enclosed by a defensive wall approximately eight metres high. Four of its original town gates still survive: Ursuline Gate, Floriani Gate, Rienz Gate and Ragen Gate.

Much of Bruneck’s history is still there, woven into the everyday life of its streets.

Settembre segna l’inizio del cambio di stagione anche per i rifugi.

Nelle Dolomiti non esiste una data di chiusura uguale per tutti. Molte strutture d’alta quota concludono la stagione estiva tra la seconda metà di settembre e l’inizio di ottobre, mentre alcune rimangono aperte più a lungo o proseguono nei weekend, in base al meteo e alle condizioni in quota.

Se state programmando un’escursione nelle prossime settimane, controllate sempre l’apertura del rifugio prima di partire e non date per scontata la possibilità di trovare acqua, cibo o un punto d’appoggio lungo il percorso.

L’autunno è uno dei periodi più belli per camminare in montagna. Richiede solo un po’ più di pianificazione.

September marks the beginning of a seasonal change for mountain huts too.

There is no single closing date across the Dolomites. Many high-altitude huts end their summer season between the second half of September and early October, while others stay open longer or continue operating on selected weekends, depending on weather and mountain conditions.

If you’re planning a hike over the next few weeks, always check whether the hut is open before setting off and don’t assume that food, water or shelter will be available along the route.

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to be in the mountains. It simply requires a little more planning.

A settembre la montagna comincia a cambiare ritmo.

Le giornate si accorciano, le temperature scendono più velocemente nel pomeriggio e l’escursione termica tra sole e ombra diventa più evidente. È il momento in cui nello zaino tornano uno strato caldo e una giacca antivento, anche quando la partenza promette una giornata mite.

In compenso, la luce si fa più bassa e morbida, i sentieri ritrovano tranquillità e il paesaggio inizia lentamente a cambiare colore.

Una stagione diversa sta iniziando sui sentieri.

September brings a change of pace to the mountains.

Days become shorter, temperatures drop faster in the afternoon and the difference between sun and shade becomes more noticeable. It’s the time of year to carry a warm layer and a windproof jacket again, even when the day starts mild.

In return, the light becomes lower and softer, the trails grow quieter and the landscape slowly begins to change colour.

A different season is starting on the trails.

Verso sera, in quota, il paesaggio cambia in pochi minuti.

La luce si abbassa sui prati, le ombre diventano più lunghe e le nuvole attraversano le cime lasciando scoperta la roccia solo per qualche istante. Anche i colori cambiano, dal verde dei pascoli ai toni più caldi delle ultime ore del giorno.

È un momento breve, prima che la luce scompaia del tutto e i sentieri tornino lentamente in ombra.

Towards evening, the landscape at higher altitudes changes within just a few minutes.

The light falls lower across the meadows, shadows grow longer and clouds move across the peaks, revealing the rock for only a few moments at a time. The colours change too, from the green of the pastures to the warmer tones of the last hours of the day.

It is a brief moment, before the light disappears completely and the trails slowly return to shadow.

Da Passo Rolle, i sentieri si diramano verso Baita Segantini, il Castellazzo, la Val Venegia e il Rifugio Mulaz.

Lungo il percorso, il paesaggio cambia continuamente. Ai grandi profili delle Pale di San Martino si alternano prati, boschi e piccoli dettagli che raccontano la vita in quota. I frutti che crescono lungo il sentiero, la legna preparata per i mesi più freddi, i segni del tempo lasciati nei tronchi.

Tra una destinazione e l’altra, sono questi dettagli a raccontare il territorio.

From Passo Rolle, the trails branch off towards Baita Segantini, Castellazzo, Val Venegia and Rifugio Mulaz.

Along the way, the landscape is constantly changing. The great profiles of the Pale di San Martino give way to meadows, forests and small details that tell the story of life at higher altitudes. Berries growing along the trail, firewood prepared for the colder months, traces of time left in the wood.

Between one destination and the next, it is these details that tell the story of the landscape.

In quota, basta una finestra per cambiare il modo in cui si guarda fuori.

Le nuvole passano veloci tra le cime, la luce si sposta sulla roccia e lo stesso profilo può apparire diverso nel giro di pochi minuti. Dai rifugi, questo continuo cambiamento diventa parte della giornata, qualcosa che si osserva da un tavolo, durante una pausa o semplicemente guardando fuori.

É anche questo che rende particolare il tempo trascorso quassù, per una volta, non serve andare da nessuna parte per vedere il paesaggio cambiare.

At higher altitudes, sometimes all it takes is a window to change the way we look outside.

Clouds move quickly between the peaks, light shifts across the rock, and the same profile can look different within just a few minutes. From a mountain hut, this constant change becomes part of the day, something to observe from a table, during a break, or simply by looking outside.

This is also what makes time spent up here so particular, for once, there is no need to go anywhere to watch the landscape change.
